Field Hockey Falls in Defensive Battle Against #11 Wesleyan

Vassar travels to Kean on Wednesday afternoon

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team fell in a defensive battle at home against #11 Wesleyan, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon. Vassar's record moves to 2-2 on the season while the Cardinals improve to 2-0.

How It Happened
  • Wesleyan scored the game-winner in the opening three minutes of the first quarter as Marley Procopio deflected in an Emily Smith shot to give the Cardinals its 1-0 lead.
  • Vassar earned a penalty corner late in the first period as sophomore Autumn Dowiak's shot was saved by Keira O'Flynn to end the quarter with a 1-0 deficit.
  • The Brewers had another chance off a corner with three minutes left in the third quarter but sophomore Sophia Jammar's shot was once again turned away by O'Flynn.
  • Vassar had two chances in the final seven minutes of the final quarter but O'Flynn made stops on Jammar and junior Mackenzie Allen to give Wesleyan its 1-0 final score.
For The Brewers
  • Jammar fired two shots on goal while sophomore Remy Phan, Dowiak and Allen all added a shot on goal.
  • First year Kendra Pitts made three saves in goal in the loss.
For The Cardinals
  • Procopio scored her first goal of the season while Smith tallied the assist.
  • Leila Feldman added two shots on goal along with Meera Patel adding a shot on target.
  • O'Flynn earned the win in goal and made five saves.
Game Statistics
  • Wesleyan outshot Vassar 16-8 on the day while the Brewers finished with a slight 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Cardinals also notched a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners.
