Field Hockey Rolls to a 5-0 Season-Opening Win Over Castleton

Five different Brewers score a goal, six tally a point

Castleton, VT - The Vassar College Field Hockey team opened the 2026 campaign on the road on Friday afternoon as the Brewers coasted to a 5-0 victory over VTSU Castleton behind four second half goals and three points from sophomore Sophia Jammar. Vassar begins the season at 1-0 while the Spartans drop to 0-2 overall.

How It Happened
  • Vassar earned two corners in the opening minute as a Jammar shot rang off the post followed by a Castleton counter where senior goalkeeper Grace Wiley made a save to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Brewers finally struck in the final minute of the first quarter off a corner as Jammar scored her first goal of the year on an insert from sophomore Sydney Yu.
  • Following a scoreless second period, Vassar struck twice in the first three minutes as sophomore Remy Phan scored her first goal as a Brewer followed by a goal from junior Mackenzie Allen to make it 3-0.
  • VC added a third goal in the third quarter off a corner with four minutes left as sophomore Autumn Dowiak knocked home a rebound off her own shot to go ahead 4-0 after three quarters.
  • Vassar added its final tally with three minutes left in regulation behind a tally from junior Hannah Lees off an assist from Jammar to earn the final 5-0 score.
For The Brewers
  • Jammar finished the contest with three points while Phan, Dowiak, Lees and Allen each scored their first goals of the season.
  • Yu notched her first assist of the 2026 campaign.
  • Wiley earned the victory in net and made one save in 41 minutes of action while sophomore Ellie Rosen played 14 minutes in goal.
  • First year Kendra Pitts made a save in five minutes of action in net.
For The Spartans
  • Gwyn Vincent and Ava Laross each had a shot on goal.
  • Izabella Cosden made 11 saves in goal in the loss.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar outshot the Spartans 21-4 overall and 16-2 on target.
  • The Brewers also dominated penalty corners, 23-5.
