POTSDAM, NY (April 28, 2012) – Six runs over the course of 16 innings was all that the Vassar College baseball team and Clarkson University could come up with on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers split their doubleheader against the Golden Knights, dropping the first 3-1 before winning 2-0 in the nightcap at Jack Phillips Stadium.
With hits and runs at a premium in the doubleheader, Vassar managed a split despite dominant two-hit performances by starters
Scott Allen and
John MacGregor in each game.
The Golden Knights moved to 16-17 overall and 10-12 in the Liberty League, while Vassar kept its playoff hopes alive at 8-12 in conference games and 10-20 overall. The two teams will meet again on Sunday to close out the series.
The opening game quickly proved to be a pitchers' duel as the two teams combined for just six hits. Vassar's
Scott Allen threw six strong innings with only three balls leaving the infield while allowing two hits that never left the infield. Unfortunately for Allen, his gem would end up as a loss as Clarkson scored three unearned runs, tallying once in the second, fourth, and sixth. Matt Jenack lined a ball to center field to score Jerry Coleman from third after he reached on an error and advanced to third on a wild pitch. In the fourth, David Wixted was able to scamper home on a throwing error, and in the sixth pinch-runner Adam Szklany came home on a groundout.
Clarkson's Bryan Chudy was dominating in a different way than Vassar's Allen, pounding the strike zone in a complete-game effort. Chudy whiffed a season-high 10 batters and walked just one, allowing four hits, including two in the top of the sixth when Vassar touched him for its only run of the game.
Game two was another deadball-era lover's dream as both starting pitchers made quick work of the opposition's lineup. MacGregor went nine scoreless innings to earn the win and gave up only a pair of singles to Wixted, who hit a dribbler in the fifth to break up the no-hitter and then found a hole in the seventh for another hit. Overall, MacGregor threw 93 pitches, but tossed just 58 in the first seven innings as the Clarkson batters swung early in the count. Thirteen of the first 23 hitters to come to the plate for Clarkson put the ball in play on either the first or second pitch of the at bat, with only Wixted coming away with a hit.
Pete Roma pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and one walk while striking out four. The sophomore righty allowed three hits in the second inning as a soft liner from
Sean Morash plated
Dave Robbins, who had led off the frame with a single. Vassar would hold a 1-0 lead until the seventh inning when the Brewers would pick up an insurance run.
Parker Werline hit a double to left and then came around on a flare double from
Kyle Casey.
Clarkson would threaten in the eighth inning when Jerry Coleman and Dan Padrazo (Setaucket, NY) each reached without the benefit of a hit, but following a double steal,
John MacGregor struck out two to end the inning and Clarkson's scoring chance.
