Baseball Overcome by Gallaudet, 7-1

Box Score

LEESBURG, FL (March 12, 2012) – Beneath the lights at Pat Thomas Stadium, the Vassar College baseball team mustered just one run, falling 7-1 to Gallaudet University in the team's second game of the year.

The Brewers (0-2) face Drew University Tuesday, March 13, at 3:30 pm at Chain of Lakes Park, making up a game that was rained out this past Sunday.

The Bison jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first three innings, with a solo home run in the second off the bat of Gallaudet centerfielder William Bissell and a two RBI double from Tommy Barksdale in the top of the third inning.

Vassar threatened to retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman third baseman Jason Garfinkel began the rally with a single up the middle, followed by a single by left fielder Parker Werline and a bunt single by right fielder Scott Allen to load the bases with no outs. Catcher A.J. Kim knocked in the Brewer's first run, scoring Garfinkel by grounding into a double play that also advanced Allen to second base. First baseman Kyle Casey singled to advance Allen to third, putting runners at the corners, but Liam Lee grounded out to end the inning.

The Brewers also rallied in the third inning. Lee led off with a double and moved to third on a single by shortstop Mike Perrone. After designated hitter Brett Zaziski struck out, second baseman Dave Robbins hit a fly out to right field. Lee attempted to tag up, but was thrown out trying to score.

Gallaudet plated two insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning and one in the eighth and ninth innings, creating the final 7-1 margin.

The Bison pitching staff protected the lead by shutting down Vassar's offense from the fourth onward as Vassar put five runners on base through errors and walks but did not manage a hit.

Vassar sophomore starting pitcher Joe Lovizio struck out 12 batters in seven innings, allowing nine hits in the contest.

The Brewers' offense was strong at the outset, with seven hits in the first four innings, although they managed just the one run.
