Baseball Stumbles in Series Opener Against Union

Schenectady, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team dropped the series opener against Union on Friday afternoon at Central Park as the Brewers fell 15-5 in seven innings to the Garnet Chargers.

Vassar's record moves to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in Liberty League play while Union improves to 6-8 overall and 1-0 in conference action.

How It Happened
  • Vassar struck for three runs in the top of the first as senior Jensen Bergman was hit by a pitch and first year Ethan Fox-Fernandez reached on a walk with one out.
  • Sophomore Dash Edwards knocked in both runners with a two-out double to right center and then was pushed across on a RBI single from first year Aidan Annello to take a 3-0 lead.
  • Union scratched out a run in the bottom half of the first on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Keaveney to plate Will Kelly to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • The Garnet Chargers hung six runs in the second following RBI walks from Caleb Miller and Kelly, a wild pitch scoring Jack McKillop, a two-RBI single from Dylan Swarts and a RBI single from Keaveney to earn a 7-3 lead.
  • Miller's two-out RBI single plated Cooper Ames to add a run in the third to give Union an 8-3 advantage.
  • VC trimmed the lead to 8-5 in the fourth inning as junior Noah Stockman singled with one out followed by first year Kieran McGrath doubling to put runners at second and third.
  • Stockman scored on a wild pitch and first year Nick Kreatsoulas knocked in McGrath with a double to get the Brewers within three.
  • Union answered with two runs of its own in the fourth on an Ames' RBI double and a RBI infield single from Benjamin Raphael to lead 10-5 after four complete.
  • The Garnet Chargers tacked on four runs in the fifth behind a three-run homer from Ryan Kolodziejczyk and a RBI single from Evan Lagemann  to expand the lead to 14-5.
  • Union earned the seven-inning run rule victory on a wild pitch that scored Swarts in the bottom of the seventh.
For The Brewers
  • Edwards drove in two runs with a double while Kreatsoulas also knocked in a run with a double.
  • Stockman and McGrath both added a hit and a run scored while Bergman extended his on-base streak to 25 straight games with a walk.
  • Junior Grant Maryott suffered the loss as he went the first two innings, allowing four hits, seven runs (six earned), five walks and struck out one.
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Keaveney finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Swarts reached base five times, scored four runs and drove in two runs.
  • Ames went 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and a RBI along with Kolodziejczyk knocking in three runs with a homer.
  • Miller added two RBI while Lagemann and Raphael each added a hit and a run batted in.
  • Alex Oppenheimer earned the complete game victory on the mound as he allowed five hits, five runs, two walks and struck out six over seven innings.

  • The two teams will close the three-game series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Prentiss Field beginning at 12:00 p.m.
