Baseball Tripped Up in Conference Twinbill

Vassar returns home for a midweek matchup with Old Westbury on Wednesday

Troy, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team hit the road for its first Liberty League doubleheader of the season as the Brewers couldn't overcome an early deficit in game one and fell 10-6 to RPI. Vassar suffered a 2-0 pitcher's duel setback in the nightcap and final game of the three-game set.

Vassar's record drops to 2-10 overall and 0-3 in league play while the Engineers move to 9-6 on the season and 3-0 in conference matchups.

Game 1 - RPI 10 Vassar 6

How It Happened
  • RPI pushed the first run across in the bottom of the first as Alex Coombes drove in Walker Abdallah with a RBI double.
  • The Engineers posted a four-run second inning behind Charlie Morse scoring on a throwing error, Coombes knocking in Charlie Lapp on a single and Ben Belliss drove in Coombes and Abdallah with a two-out single to go ahead 5-0.
  • Vassar loaded the bases in the third with one out following a walk from sophomore Miller Young, a double from first year Noah Townsend and a hit by pitch of senior Jensen Bergman but RPI starter Liam Riordan induced a strikeout and a line out to escape the threat.
  • Andrew Crux's solo homer to lead off the third inning expanded the RPI lead to 6-0.
  • RPI's lead grew to 8-0 in the fifth as Michael Lebenson's two-out two RBI opposite field single scored Abdallah and Lapp.
  • VC cut the deficit to 8-3 in the sixth inning following a RBI groundout from first year Kieran McGrath, RBI fielder's choice from Townsend and a bases loaded walk of first year Jack Johnson.
  • The Brewers got within 8-6 in the eighth as McGrath doubled home first year Jack Biskupiak, who drew a leadoff walk, along with Townsend knocking in two runs with a two-out single to bring Vassar within two.
  • RPI added two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning on a bases loaded HBP of Lapp and a RBI walk from Abdallah.
For The Brewers
  • Townsend recorded a 2-for-5 day with three runs batted in and a double while McGrath knocked in two runs and knocked in two runs.
  • Bergman added a hit, a stolen base and reached base three times along with first year Aidan Annello tallying a hit and two runs scored.
  • Senior Addison Lee took the loss on the mound as he went five innings, allowing 10 hits, eight runs (two earned) and struck out five.
  • First year Eric Wallick threw two scoreless innings of relief and struck out two.
For The Engineers
  • Coombes and Bellis both finished with two hits and two runs batted in while Abdallah finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a RBI.
  • Crux garnered two hits, including a homer, two runs scored and a RBI along with Morse posting two hits and a run scored.
  • Lebenson registered a hit and two runs batted in.
  • Riordan earned the win following 6.1 innings, giving up three hits, three runs, four walks and struck out 10.
  • Zac Zajac tossed a scoreless ninth inning and struck out one.

Game 2 - RPI 2 Vassar 0

How It Happened
  • RPI struck for the only scoring of the game in the bottom of the first inning after Abdallah drawing a lead off walk and Lebenson blasting an opposite field homer to go ahead 2-0.
  • Vassar's best chance came in the top of the sixth as Bergman led off with a single, stole second and then advanced to third with one out on a Fox-Fernandez single.
  • RPI starter Belliss induced a 5-4-3 double play to keep the shutout intact.
For The Brewers
  • Johnson, Bergman, Fox-Fernandez, Biskupiak and first year Nick Kreatsoulas each recorded a hit.
  • Junior Will Darrell suffered the touch luck loss on the mound as he went six innings, allowing six hits, two runs, two walks and struck out five.
  • Junior Patrick Mill tossed two scoreless innings of relief.
For The Engineers
  • Lebenson drove in the two runs of the game with a home while Abdallah tallied a hit and a run scored.
  • Matt Chotiner finished 2-for-4 along with Coombes, Robbie Reddington and Morse each registered a hit.
  • Belliss earned the win after throwing six shutout innings, allowing four hits, two walks and struck out six.
  • Mike Nelson and Cruz each threw a scoreless inning of relief and Zajac picked up his second save of the season while striking out two.

  • Vassar will return to Prentiss Field for a midweek matchup with Old Westbury on Wednesday.
  • RPI will host MCLA on Wednesday.
