Bergman Breaks Triples Record, Hits for the Cycle in Baseball's Doubleheader Sweep of Union

Bergman's triple in game two broke the school record, collects first cycle in program history

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team slugged out 33 hits and 30 runs to soar to a Liberty League doubleheader sweep of Union at home on Sunday afternoon. Vassar run-ruled the Garnet Chargers 15-5 in game one followed by senior Jensen Bergman breaking the all-time triples record and hitting for the cycle in the Brewers' 15-8 triumph in game two.

Vassar's record improves to 5-11 overall and 2-4 in Liberty League play while Union drops to 6-10 overall and 1-2 in conference matchups.

Game 1 - Vassar 15 Union 5 (8 innings)

How It Happened
  • Union took the early 1-0 lead in the first after Caleb Miller scored on a wild pitch and then pushed the lead to three on a two-RBI triple from Ryan Kolodziejczyk in the third.
  • Vassar answered with four runs in the third to take the lead following a RBI single from Bergman, a two-RBI single from first year Aidan Annello and a RBI double from first year Kieran McGrath.
  • The Brewers lead ballooned to 7-3 in the fourth as first year Jack Biskupiak doubled home a run and later scored on an error along with junior Noah Stockman adding a RBI single.
  • The Garnet Chargers cut the lead to 7-5 behind two solo homers from Miller and Dylan Swarts in the top of the fifth.
  • Vassar responded with four runs in the fifth following RBI base hits from first year Noah Townsend and sophomore Dash Edwards along with a two-RBI single from Bergman.
  • The Brewers tacked on a run in the sixth on a RBI single from Townsend to expand the lead to 12-5.
  • Vassar earned the run-rule victory in the eighth inning behind a RBI double from Townsend, a RBI single from Bergman and a double from Biskupiak that clinched the 15-5 win.
For The Brewers
  • Townsend recorded a perfect 5-for-5 game with two doubles, four runs scored and three RBI along with Bergman going 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored.
  • Biskupiak tallied two doubles, two RBI, two walks and two runs scored while Edwards registered two hits, two runs scored and a run batted in.
  • First year Eric Wallick also posted two hits and a run scored while first year Nick Kreatsoulas posting a hit, three runs scored and two walks.
  • McGrath added a double, two runs scored and a RBI along with Annello driving in two runs and Stockman knocking in one.
  • Senior Addison Lee earned the win on the mound as he went 6.1 innings, allowing five hits, five runs, three walks and struck out seven.
  • Junior Sage Roy-Burman tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and struck out four.
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Miller finished 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and a RBI while Kolodziejcyk added a triple and two RBI.
  • Swarts recorded a homer, two runs scored and a RBI along with Evan Lagemann tallying a hit.
  • Jacob Skarlis took the loss on the mound following 3.2 innings, allowing nine hits, six runs (five earned), one walk and struck out five.
Game 2 - Vassar 15 Union 8

How It Happened
  • Vassar took the early lead in game two as Biskupiak knocked in a run with a single followed by McGrath's RBI double to put the Brewers ahead 2-0 in the first.
  • The Brewers tacked on three runs in the second on Bergman's record-setting triple as he cleared the bases for the 14th triple of his career.
  • Union got back within 5-3 in the third inning on a towering three-run homer from Swarts.
  • VC blasted two homers in the fourth to expand the lead to 8-3 following a two-run homer from Bergman and a solo homer from McGrath.
  • The Garnet Chargers scratched out a run in the fifth on a RBI double from Kolodziejczyk to trim the advantage to 8-4.
  • Wallick's two-RBI single in the sixth put the Brewers up 10-4 and VC expanded the lead to 12-4 on two errors in the seventh.
  • Union battled back to get within four in the eighth inning as Swarts scored on a wild pitch, a two-RBI double from Cooper Ames and Ames scoring a wild pitch to make it 12-8.
  • VC tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth inning as Biskupiak knocked in a run with a single and McGrath's two RBI double scored Bergman, who singled in the inning to complete the cycle for the first time in program history.
For The Brewers
  • Bergman completed the cycle going 4-for-5 with five RBI and five runs scored while McGrath added three hits, including his first career homer, two doubles, four RBI and two runs scored.
  • Biskupiak totaled two hits, two run scored and two RBI along with Edwards going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and two walks.
  • Townsend added a hit and a run scored along with Wallick knocking in two runs.
  • Junior Will Darrell earned his second win of the season as he went seven innings, allowing six hits, four runs, two walks and struck out nine.
  • Senior Danny Wellner tossed a scoreless ninth inning and struck out two.
For The Garnet Chargers
  • Miller went 3-for-5 with a run scored along with Swarts finishing with two hits, including a homer, two runs scored and three RBI.
  • Ames added two RBI and a double while Kolodziejczyk adding a hit and a run batted in.
  • Andrew Keaveney went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Brendan McCormick added a pinch-hit single.
  • Alex Casey took the loss on the mound as he went three-plus innings, allowing six hits, seven runs, five walks and struck out two.
