AMHERST, MA (February 11, 2012) – The Vassar College women's fencing team had an outstanding afternoon competing at the North East Conference Multi Meet #3 at the University of Massachusetts, compiling an impressive 5-1 record. The team loss was a narrow one to Sacred Heart in the last round. Vassar women's epee was dominant, winning as a squad in every match.
That Brewers finish the 2011-12 dual match season with a 21-17 record. Vassar will host the NEIFC Championships in Walker Field House on February 25.
Outstanding performers on the day were
Brooke Schieffer (16-1) in sabre,
Katie LeClair (16-2) in foil, and the three starting epee fencers,
Veronica Weser (14-3),
Caitlin Clevenger (13-5) and
Megan Lewis (14-3).
Round 1 – BYE
Round 2 – Vassar 24, University of Massachusetts-Amherst 3
Despite a late start, Vassar was dominant in this round. Foil was undefeated at 9-0, sabre was 8-1 with Schieffer and
Tracy Bratt undefeated and
Kathleen Konno adding the other two wins. Epee was 7-2.
Round 3 – Vassar 17, Wellesley 10.
All three Vassar squads came out on top in the end, but foil and sabre were only 5-4 margins. Clevenger had a tough round in epee, but Weser and Lewis were undefeated as were Leclair and Schieffer in foil and sabre, and they provided the margin of victory at the end.
Round 4 – Vassar 19, University of New Hampshire 8
Sabre had a tough round, going 4-5 against a challenging UNH squad. Foil had another solid squad victory behind Leclair at 3-0 and
Elizabeth Ilechko at 2-1. Epee was totally dominant at 9-0. With
Noelle Sawyer and
Anastasia Stevens adding wins to the starter's totals.
Round 5 – Vassar, 16 Dartmouth 11
Sabre had a challenging round, going 4-5, even though Schieffer was undefeated. LeClair and Ilechko had two wins each and
Alia Heintz added a third for a 5-4 squad victory to even things out. Epee continued to be in control combining for a 7-2 squad win.
Round 6 – Vassar 18, Boston University 9
Sabre again had a tough round, falling 4-5, despite Schieffer and Konno taking two bouts each. Foil was strong (6-3), with LeClair at 3-0 and Katharine Swseeney at 2-1. Epee continued to cruise with an 8-1 squad win.
Round 7 – Vassar 12, Sacred Heart University 15
This match was close to leading the Brewers to a perfect afternoon of fencing. Sabre came back strong in the round with a 5-4 squad win with 3 wins from Schieffer and two from Bratt. Epee met its strongest challenge of the day, wresting a 5-4 victory from a strong SHU squad. Foil needed to take four bouts for the team win, but came up two short after a long, hard day a against a solid SHU foil group.
