Weiss and Hale Highlight Men's Swimming and Diving Home Opener

Matt Weiss won the 100 and took second in the 200 yard breaststroke for 13 points.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 3, 2012) – The Vassar College men's swimming and diving team stepped up and challenged Skidmore College in Vassar's first home meet of the 2012-13 season despite falling 163-123 to the Thoroughbreds.

Matt Weiss and Isaiah Hale teamed up in the 100 yard breaststroke and the 200 yard breaststroke to add 26 points to the team total. Weiss won the 100 (1:03.97) while Hale took second (1:07.05) and Hale won the 200 (2:28.28) while Weiss took second (2:29.14).

Vassar will next host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on November 10 at Kresge Pool at 1:00 pm. Skidmore will next host Oneonta State on November 9 at 4:00 pm at the Williamson Sports Center Pool.

Senior co-captain Mathúe Duhaney won both the 100 yard freestyle and 50 yard freestyle events. Duhaney swam a time of 51.35 in the 100 and a 22.98 in the 50. Greg Cristina teamed with Duhaney in the 50 free for a third place finish with a respective time of 23.74. Duhaney also took second in the 100 yard butterfly (57.70).

The Brewers' second senior co-captain Nick Veazie came from behind in the 200 yard butterfly for a dramatic first place finish with a season-best time of 2:12.80. Veazie also took a second place finish in the 200 yard freestyle (1:57.56) and a third place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (58.42).

Sophomore Frank Driscoll brought the whole pool to their feet during the 500 yard freestyle as he rolled past the Skidmore lead swimmer for the first place finish with a time of (5:16.48). Driscoll had trailed the lead swimmer until the final 200 yards. Driscoll took second in the 1,000 yard freestyle (11:03.88) and third in the 200 yard butterfly (2:16.86).

The Brewers rounded out their first dual meet with another exciting first place victory in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The team of Veazie, Luc Amodio, Cristina and Driscoll won by less than one second with a time of 1:32.91. “If we couldn't win an event, we were right there along side a competitive Skidmore team,” head coach Lisl Prater-Lee said. “Not only can we feel good about that, but we know we have even more to bring forward.”
