Busy Day For Women's Fencing at Sacred Heart Invitational

BRIDGEPORT, CT (November 11) -- It was long day and busy day for the Vassar College women's fencing team with seven rounds of competition at the Sacred Heart Invitational.  The Brewers went 3-4 with victories over West Point, Farleigh Dickinson, and Yeshiva.

Outstanding performer on the day was senior captain Caitlin Clevenger in Epee at 16-5. Other notable records were sophomore Megan Lewis at 10-11 also in epee, senior captain Katie LeClair (7-8) and senior Katharine Sweeney (8-9) in foil, and  senior Tracy Bratt (9-10) in sabre.

Haverford 17 Vassar 10
Haverford has a solid women's team this year and Vassar didn't exactly hit the ground running. LeClair and Sweeney only managed one victory each in foil. Epee and sabre were close 4-5 squad losses, but only Bratt, Clevenger, and Lewis were able to secure more than one victory each.

Vassar 15 FDU 12
FDU has a new coach, Christian Rivera, and he fielded a full team this year and looks to be turning the program around. Vassar foil and epee were still able to dominate the round at 7-2 each , but Bratt was only able to secure one sabre victory against their tough squad. In epee, junior Noelle Sawyer was 2-1 as was senior Victoria Weiss in her new weapon, foil.

Cornell 24 Vassar 3
Cornell always has a strong team and qualifies two or three fencers to the NCAAs every year. This team was no different. Vassar's three hard–fought victories in the round were all in epee with Clevenger securing two tough wins and Lewis one.

Vassar 14 West Point 13
This was our first match against the Army women in a number of years. Because Hunter dropped out, Vassar added them late to the schedule. It was a close, tough match. Foil and Sabre led the way for Vassar. Katharine Sweeney was undefeated at 3-0 and new foilist  Anastasia Stevens was 2-1. Bratt was 3-0 in sabre with help from senior Jillian Josimovich and  sophomore Kathleen Konno with one victory each. Epee had a tough round, but was able to secure the 4 remaining bouts needed for the team victory.

SHU 23 Vassar 4
Sacred Heart has built a much stronger women's squad over the last two or three years. Vassar was able to steal away 3 bouts in foil (LeClair  was 2-1 and Stevens 1-2), but only managed one epee victory from Clevenger, and sabre was went 0-9.

Vassar 23 Yeshiva 4
Vassar was able to bounce back against the Maccabees. Foil was 6-3 with wins by LeClair, Sweeney, Weiss, and Stevens. Sabre was 8-1 with Bratt, Josimovich and Konno all undefeated. Freshman Hannah Frimtzis also won a bout in that round. Epee was best at 9-0 with Clevenger, Lewis, and Sawyer undefeated.

Stevens 20 Vassar 7
Stevens has a strong squad this year and this was the last round of a grueling day for Vassar. Victoria Weiss held on for one 5-4 bout in foil, but the squad went 1-8 on the round. Sabre only managed two wins, one for Konno, and another for freshman Lily Elbaum. Epee was closest at 4-5, with two wins from Clevenger and one each from Lewis and freshman Margaret Shepherd.

Next up for the Brewers is the Hudson River Matt Lampell Invitational at Walker Field House this coming Saturday November 17.
