ITHACA, NY (October 1, 2012) – A mix of experienced veterans and a talented core of freshmen competed admirably for the Vassar College men's tennis team at the ITA Northeast Regionals at Ithaca College. The doubles team of
Andrew Guzick-
Dan Freeman advanced to the finals, while the Brewers displayed some stellar singles play across the board.
The emerging talents of Guzick and Freeman were on display as the duo lost in finals against Drew's Hunter Lathrop/Raul Smego, 6-2, 6-3. To reach the finals, the Vassar duo defeated a strong TCNJ team of Marc Nicols/TJ Riley in the semi-finals, 8-4, and Boris Borovacanin/Julian Danko of Rochester, 8-5, in the quarters.
“Andrew and Dan had some big wins along the way,” said head coach John Cox. “After playing all their matches outside, rain moved the doubles competition indoors and the surface was more suitable to the Drew team. The surface simply played more to their advantage than ours. But my guys had a great run toward a championship,” Cox added.
In singles play, Guzick made a concerted run toward a second straight ITA Championship, losing in the semi-finals to the eventual champion, Oliver Loutsenko of Skidmore, 6-4, 6-1.
A pair of freshmen distinguished themselves at Ithaca. Freshman
Daniel Cooper had a fantastic tournament, advancing to the third round where he was defeated by TJ Riley from TCNJ, 6-3, 5-7, 1-6. “To lose in a tough three-set match to the number one player from TCNJ says a lot about where Dan is headed the rest of the season,” said Cox.
Another Vassar freshman,
Christian Phelps, lost a tightly-contested match to an emerging star from Stevens, Matthew Heinrich, 6-2, 6-3. In his run to the semifinals, Guzick has to step up his game to defeat Heinrich 7-5, 6-0.
“The ITA features great competition and it's good for the new guys to experience playing at this level,” said Cox. “Because of this experience, we're going to be a deeper and stronger team going forward in our last two matches against Union and Bard and especially in our spring season.”
Vassar will host Union on Saturday, October 6 at 11:00 am. Following that match, the Brewers will travel to Bard College for a 4:00 p.m. match.
