POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 22, 2012) -- It was a successful morning for the Vassar College women's fencing team. The Brewers earned two much needed victories over Cleveland State University and University of Detroit Mercy at Walker Field House prior to very difficult Northeast Conference matches next weekend at Boston College.
Next week, the Brewers (12-11) travel to Boston College to face BC, Brandeis, Tufts, MIT, Smith, and Brown in NFC Multimeet #1.
Outstanding performers on the day were Katie Leclair in foil and
Brooke Schieffer in Sabre. Both went undefeated.
Round 1 – Vassar 22, Cleveland State University 5
CSU was short a couple of epee fencers, but the fencer they had was good, handing the Vassar starters their only losses on the day. Sabre did fare better with Schieffer,
Tracy Bratt, and
Kathleen Konno all winning bouts in the round.
Katharine Sweeney had a good round at 2-1 in foil and Leclair was even better at 3-0.
Round 2 - Vassar 23, University of Detroit Mercy 4
Epee redeemed itself against UDM with
Veronica Weser,
Caitlin Clevenger, Megal Lewis and
Noelle Sawyer all undefeated. Liz Ilechko and
Alia Heintz got two victories each, with Leclair 3-0 in foil and Schiffer also 3-0 in sabre.
