POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 19, 2011) – The Vassar College men's swimming and diving team showed great improvement since last season and lost a close dual meet to SUNY New Paltz 156-134 on Saturday at Kresge Pool.

The Brewers (2-2) next compete in the Liberty League Championships on December 2-3 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Union College will host the diving events.

“They competed well did what they could to race well,” said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee. “To be within 22 points of New Paltz is a good day.”

Senior captain Jack Smart continued a string of strong performances for Vassar, picking up a pair of wins in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:15.95 and the 400 IM in 4:28.75.

Vassar's Nick Veazie won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.08 with a very competitive race against Michael Lacroce of New Paltz (2:06.58).

“Nick had a pure guts swim in the 200 fly,” said assistant coach Dan Decker.

Freshman Luc Amodio won 100-yard freestyle in 51.37 with five hundredths of a second separating him from Corey Lomas of New Paltz in second place (51.42).

Vassar swept the diving which helped Vassar stay competitive. “It was the first time in a long time if not ever that we've had three men's divers,” said Prater-Lee.

Making his season debut in the 400 IM, Kevin Lee placed fourth in 4:41.51.

Vassar welcomed the return of its distance free contingent of Simon Whitelaw and Evan Einstein.

“We didn't have them last week and we're glad to have Simon and  Evan in the 1000 and 500 free,” said Prater-Lee.
