TROY, NY (November 12, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's swimming and diving team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Liberty League rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) by a score of 174-126 on Saturday.
“Victories were hard to grab on the men's side but when Vassar had a chance for victory it capitalized,” said head coach
Lisl Prater-Lee. "We had some highlights today. We know we can have more highlights next week against New Paltz."
The Brewers (2-1) host the cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz on Saturday, November 12, at 1:00 p.m. at Kresge Pool.
Luc Amodio earned Vassar's first victory of the day in the 100 yd backstroke where he and Chuck Herrmann teamed up for 1st (56.63) and 5th (1:00.03), respectively.
Vassar earned big team points in the 100 yd breaststroke in which
Jack Smart (1:02.90),
Matt Weiss (1:04.07), and Chris Wang (1:09.76) teamed up for 1st, 4th, and 5th, all season-best times.
Nick Veazie,
Kevin Lee, and Herrman finished 2nd (2:06.28), 4th (2:12.56), and 5th (2:17.32), respectively, in the 200 yd backstroke.
Just a few minutes later, Smart (2:17.32), Weiss (2:25.92), and Wang (2:29.62) teamed up yet again, this time in the 200 yd breaststroke, to take 1st, 4th, and 5th. Smart and
Kevin Lee toppled their previous in-season best times in the 200 yd IM with their respective 2:05.27 (2nd) and 2:10.66 (4th).
Weiss earned three life-time bests today in the 100 yd and 200 yd breaststrokes and in the 200 yd IM (2:14.09).
Diver
Greg Sullivan continues to impress against very strong competition. Greg was 1st in 1-meter (286.95 points) and 2nd in 3-meter (292.15 points) today, again with NCAA qualifying scores. Diver
Rafael Ricaurte continued to show strong improvement as he was 3rd on 1-meter (99.10 points) and 5th on 3-meter (113.95 points), his first-ever collegiate 3-meter diving competition.
