CLEVELAND, OH (January 17, 2011) – In the shadows of Chuck Berry, the Beatles and competing in the city that houses the venerable Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Vassar College women's fencing team made beautiful music with a 5-0 sweep of the field at the Cleveland State Invitational.
The Brewers will take their five game winning streak and impressive 19-4 record to Yale University in New Haven on Tuesday, January 18 at 7:00 p.m.
Senior captain Jackie Kory was undefeated 11-0 in foil and sophomore
Katie Leclair was 10-1 in the same weapon. Senior captain
Julie Carlsen and junior
Brooke Schieffer were both undefeated at 8-0 in the competition. In epee bouts, senior
Sophie Courser went 12-1 and sophomore
Caitlin Clevenger wents 11-2 in epee.
Round 1 – Vassar 25, Cleveland State University 2
CSU has no sabre squad and only one foilist. They are waiting on the NCAA to approve four starters for competition for this semester. They managed to take two bouts in epee, but Vassar epee still rolled at 7-2 with Clevenger at 3-0.
Round 2 – Vassar 26, University of Detroit/Mercy 1
Vassar's last meeting with UDM was two years ago at Vassar. This time UDM only managed to take one sabre bout from the strong Vassar squad.
Round 3 – Vassar 23, Wayne State University 4
Ssabre romped at 9-0 in this round with Carlsen and Schieffer at 3-0, sophomore
Tracy Bratt winning one bout and freshman Hallie Stotlet at 2-0. In epee, both Corser and junior
Veronica Weser went 3-0. Foil held up its end with Kory undefeated and Leclair and junior
Alia Heintz each adding a win.
Round 4 – Vassar 24, Case Western Reserve University 3
Case is a club team that Vassar had never before faced. They were short a sabre squad, forfeiting 9 bouts, but Vassar epee and foil also dominated at 8-1 and 7-2 respectively.
Round 5 – Vassar 24, University Michigan 3
The Michigan team has club status only, but it is a strong and well-coached team that usually finished in the top 5 at US Club Championships every year. Vassar foil was undefeated at 9-0. Sabre was 8-1 and epee 7-2.
