POTSDAM, NY (April 11, 2010) – Thanks to a big four-run seventh inning, the Vassar College baseball team avoided a four-game sweep at Clarkson University on Sunday, winning the night cap 9-6 after dropping the first game, 6-2 at Jack Phillips Stadium.
The Brewers conclude the weekend with a 6-14 record, 2-10 in the Liberty League. Vassar hosts SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. The Golden Knights moved to 8-12 overall with a 6-6 league mark and will host St. Michael's and Brockport State in a pair of doubleheaders next Saturday and Sunday.
Game One
In the first game of the doubleheader, Clarkson took little time getting on the scoreboard as three of the first four batters hit singles, with senior Brett Peplowski's scoring Jerry Coleman with one out in the inning. Vassar responded with a run in the bottom of the inning as sophomore outfielder

Mike Perrone, tying the score up at 1-1.
Two innings later, Clarkson picked up two more runs to take the lead for good. Peplowski drove home a run with a sacrifice fly, scoring Matt Curry. Chris Falteisek followed that up with a single to plate David Kinney. In the top of the fourth, Clarkson scored twice more as a pair of runners came around to score on a throwing error. The Knights added another run in the seventh when Kinney scored on a hit from Falteisek.
Freshman Bryan Chudy went the distance to pick up his first collegiate win, allowing nine hits in seven innings while strike out four. He also picked off three runners at first base, giving him seven for the season. Sophomore starter
John MacGregor pitched well for Vassar, tossing seven innings and striking out seven in the process with no walks. MacGregor allowed four earned runs on 11 hits, falling to 0-3.
Perrone went 3-for-3 to lead Vassar, while Costanzo and junior catcher
David Ringold each were 2-for-3. Kinney went 3-for-4 and scored twice, while Falteisek went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Game Two
Although trailing 5-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth in the second game, the Brewers steadily chipped away at the Clarkson lead, tying the game in the fifth and taking the lead for good with four runs in the seventh.
Heading into the seventh inning, tied at 5-5, senior
Ari Glantz led off with a single, stole second, and scored thanks to a Costanzo RBI single to right field to give Vassar the lead. Junior outfielder
Devon Luongo moved Costanzo to second with a sacrifice bunt, a base hit from freshman designated hitter
David Keith put runners on the corners, and a single from Ringold loaded the bases with one out for junior catcher
Mike Plude. Plude delivered with what would prove to be the game-winning hit, sending a two RBI single to left field. Junior
Joe Castilla, who entered as a pinch hitter in the fourth inning, tacked on one more run with an RBI single to score Ringold from second.
Vassar sophomore reliever
Scott Allen held off the Golden Knights, allowing just one run in the ninth inning en route to his first win of the season. Allen pitched four innings to improve to 1-2, allowing one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Vassar junior starter
Daniel Berkowitz went five innings, with three earned runs on seven hits, four strikeouts and three walks.
The Brewers struck in the first inning, scoring their first run on an overthrow on a steal attempt at second, and Luongo drove in the second run with a single to the left side. Clarkson picked up a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning as Sam Grainger and Scott Morrissey drove in runs with groundouts to the right side.
Clarkson scored three more in the top of the fourth inning, starting on a one-out triple by Morrissey. Jerry Coleman drove the freshman in with a hit up the middle and then Kinney blasted a two-run double two batters later to give Clarkson a 5-2 edge.
However, Vassar continued to chip away against the Knights, scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth and then tying the game up at 5-5 thanks to a two-run double from Glantz.
Glantz went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, two runs, and three stolen bases to lead the Brewers, while Plude was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Ringold added two hits, one run and one RBI, while Castilla went 2-for-3 with one RBI. The Brewers stole five bases in the game, three from Glantz, and one apiece from Perrone and sophomore second baseman
Liam Lee.
The top of the order produced in game two for Clarkson as Coleman went 2-for-4, Curry was 2-for-5, and Kinney went 3-for-4. The rest of the lineup combined for five hits. Anthony Farrell took the loss for Clarkson, allowing three runs in two and one-third innings.
