Freshmen Efforts Boost Baseball to 11-3 Win Over Gallaudet

AUBURNDALE, FL (March 18, 2010) – Behind big contributions from freshmen both offensively and defensively, the Vassar College baseball team concluded its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 11-3 win over Gallaudet University on Thursday at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

The Brewers improve to 2-2 and will quickly take the field again upon returning to the Northeast, hosting Swarthmore College in a double-header for the Brewers' home-opener on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Bison fall to 0-10.

Vassar never trailed, leading 6-1 after three innings, and scored at least one run in all but two innings.

In his first career start, freshman Lawrence Flicker earned his first collegiate win, pitching 6.1 innings and allowing just two runs on three hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Making his first appearance, freshman Zander Mrlik threw 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts.

Offensively, freshmen also led the way as Michael Perrone went 3-for-4 with a triple and two singles, while Sean Morash was 2-for-3 with a double and a single. Junior Devon Luongo went 2-for-3 with a walk and fielder's choice. The Brewers had nine hits and three stolen bases in the win.
