WINTER HAVEN, FL (March 15, 2010) – Although the Vassar College baseball team found itself in a quick 4-0 hole following the first half inning of play against Framingham State College at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Monday, the Brewers battled back and the teams took a 7-7 tie into the tenth inning. Unfortunately for the Brewers, it was the Rams who had the decisive hit, taking home an 8-7 win to spoil Vassar's season opener.
The Brewers (0-1) take on Sewanee University tomorrow at 3:30 while the Rams pick up their first win to improve to 1-3.
“We played well today, especially for our first game outside,” said head coach
Jon Martin. “It was a good day, unfortunately we just didn't get the win.”
With a runner on second in the top of the 10th inning, the Rams got a single to score and take an 8-7 lead. Though the Brewers loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning, they were unable to capitalize.
Framingham jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the first, but Vassar quickly began to mount a comeback with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Rams tacked on two more in the second and one more in the third, but the Brewers countered with one in the second, two and the fourth, and the tying two runs in the seventh.
“We hung in there and battled back to score runs,” said Martin. “Farmingdale was able to get that one hit and we just couldn't get it back in the bottom of the 10th inning.”
Although Vassar's starter, sophomore
John MacGregor, gave up the early runs through the first three innings, he buckled down to hold the Rams scoreless through the next three innings, finishing with a strong line as he scattered eight hits over six innings with six strikeouts to just one walk. Freshman
Lawrence Flicker had an auspicious debut, pitching two innings of shutout baseball and sophomore
Zachary Prudoff pitched the final two innings, taking the loss with two innings pitched, two strikeouts, and two hits.
Leading a Vassar offense that produced 18 hits on the day was sophomore
Sal Costanzo, who went 5-for-6 with two doubles and one run scored. Freshman Michael Perrone went 3-for-6 with three stolen bases and two runs scored in his collegiate debut while senior
Ari Glantz and junior
Joe Castilla added two hits apiece. The Brewers were 8-for-10 on the base paths.
