POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 30, 2010) – The Vassar College women's swimming and diving team faced a formidable challenge on Saturday's Senior Day at Kresge Pool, hosting a deep New York University squad that has lost just one meet all year and is ranked No. 19 in the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III Poll. Although the Brewers dropped a 177-65 decision, they put forth a strong effort with a depleted roster due to injury and JYA.
In their final dual meet of the year, the Brewers fall to 2-4. Vassar has one event left before the NYSWCAA Championships, competing in the Sprint Invitational hosted by Skidmore College next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Violets are now 8-1 on the season.
“NYU is always a national caliber team and they have an extremely deep roster,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. “NYU really pushed us today and I was glad to see how we performed against such top talent.”
Sophomore
Caroline Shannon proved her mettle against the strong competition, with two wins. Shannon recorded a convincing victory in the 200 IM, finishing in 2:18.79, over five seconds faster than NYU's second place finisher. She added another strong win in the 200 Breast (2:35.59), again five seconds faster than the runner-up. Freshman
Shannon Sara had two strong races, placing second in the 200 Free (2:00.54) and 500 Free (5:23.25). In the 200 Free, Shannon was narrowly edged by .39 of a second.
“This was great competition for Caroline and Shannon, and they swam well today,” said Kueterman.
In her final performance at Kresge Pool, senior
Jordana Jantze picked up a win in the 50 Free, finishing first in 26.40, .38 seconds faster than NYU's second place finisher. Jantze also placed second in the 100 Free (57.57).
Senior
Alyse Larkin also swam well on Senior Day, with a split of 25.95 in the 200 Free Relay, as Larkin, freshman
Sydnie Alquist, junior
Meg McCarty, and Jantze teamed up to place second in 1:46.39. Larkin recorded a personal best in the 200 Back (2:35.33).
“Alyse has really stepped it up lately as we've been missing swimmers due to JYA and it was great to see her swim so well on Senior Day,” said Kueterman.
Sophomore
Amy Entwisle had a strong swim in the 1,000 Free, shaving 10 seconds off her personal best with a time of 11:40.76.
“The Sprint Invitational next weekend will be important in giving us one more rehearsal before the state championships,” said Kueterman. “We'll hope to see the progress we made continue into that final meet.”
In their final meet in Kresge Pool, the Brewers honored seniors Jantze, Larkin and
Maeve McCoy.
