HARTFORD, CT (January 13, 2010) – Facing off against a member of the extremely competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), the Vassar College men's swimming and diving team was narrowly edged by Trinity College, 160-132, in its first dual meet of 2010 on Wednesday.

The Brewers fall to 2-3 and jump right back into competition at the Kumpf Invitational, hosted by Rensselaer this Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

Although Vassar led late in the meet, Trinity picked up crucial back-to-back 1-2-3 finishes in the 500 Free and 100 Fly to edge the Brewers.

Following a week of intense training on their winter break training trip to an abnormally cold Plantation, Florida, the Brewers put together some strong performances.

“We've been training really hard with double sessions every day and I was pleased with how the men responded in the pool today,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman.

Vassar started the meet off strong, as the youthful 200 Medley Relay team of freshman Nicholas Veazie, sophomore Jack Smart, freshman Mathue Duhaney, and sophomore Dustin Molina picked up a win with a time of 1:44.24. Smart took home three individual wins of his own, in the 100 Breast (1:03.14), 200 Breast (2:20.17), and 200 IM (2:06.53). Senior Jeremy Shiman followed Smart in second place in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:25.73 while Duhaney and Molina put together a 1-2 finish of their own in the 50 Free, paced by Duhaney's winning time of 23.31, followed closely by Molina in 23.67.

Sophomore diver Greg Sullivan won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. He scored a strong 262.80 in the 3-meter, and recorded a 237.2 in the 1-meter.

Kueterman looks forward to this Saturday's Kumpf Invitational, a new event on the schedule.

“It will be good for us to get up and be racing again so quickly,” said Kueterman. “They performed well today and it will be good to have an opportunity to build on that on Saturday.”
