SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (November 7, 2009) – Buoyed by strong performances from both freshmen and upperclassmen, the Vassar College women's swim-dive team opened up the season with a 172-122 win over Skidmore College on Saturday.
The Brewers (1-0) will head to Rensselaer for their next meet on Saturday, November 14.
“The score was close early on, and I was really impressed with how the women stepped it up in the second half of the meet,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. “Our freshmen made a tremendous impact in their first career meet. That, combined with the steady performance of our upperclassmen, was really positive to see in the first meet of the season.”
In the first competition of their collegiate careers, freshman
Shannon Sara and sophomore
Christie Musket made an immediate impact, as Sara won three individual events, the 200 IM (2:18.13), 200 Free (2:03.41), and 500 Free (5:31.52), and swam on the winning 200 Medley Relay team, and Musket, a first-year diver, put forth a strong performance, winning the 1-meter, with a score of 181.05 and finishing second in the 3-meter, scoring a 150.60.
“Christie was under a lot of pressure today because neither of our other divers was able to compete due to injury and illness,” explained diving coach Tom Albright. “It was a lot of weight to carry, but she did incredibly well. She really came through today and we're expecting great things from her throughout the year.”
Junior
Samantha Jones and senior
Jordana Jantze displayed their experience and poise on Saturday, as Jones picked up individual wins in the 100 Fly (1:03.30), 100 Back (1:03.68), and 200 Back (2:19.33) while Jantze placed first in the 50 Free (26.31) and 100 Free (57.28). Both Jones and Jantze joined with Sara and sophomore
Caroline Shannon to win the 200 Medley Relay in 1:57.03. The Brewers also picked up a relay win in the 200 Free, as junior
Meg McCarty, freshman
Sydnie Alquist, freshman
Alexandra Hughes, and Jantze joined to win with a time of 1:47.48. Shannon picked up an individual win in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:35.25.
“It was great to see our experienced returners putting forth such strong swims,” said Kueterman. “It's comforting to know we have our upperclassmen to rely on as our freshmen continue to improve and learn.”
The Brewers went 1-2-3 in the 200 back, as Hughes placed second behind Jones in 2:24.61, with junior
Melisa Brower rounding out the top three with a time of 2:26.04. Vassar also had a strong finish in the 200 IM, as Shannon placed second behind Sara in 2:19.71.
