POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 21, 2009) – In its final dual meet before the Liberty League Championships, the Vassar College men's swim-dive team faced a formidable opponent in cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz and had a strong showing despite a 126-101 final score in favor of the Hawks on Saturday at Kresge Pool. Although a loss, the score showed great improvement for the Brewers, who fell 130-70 to the Hawks last season.
The Brewers drop to 2-2 and will have a week off of competition before traveling to University of Rochester for the Liberty League Championships, December 4 and 5.
"Coming off Friday's meet against Pace, this was a good turnaround for us against a strong team," said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. "I think we surprised New Paltz in a couple events with all the options we have on our roster this year."
Against a talented New Paltz squad, sophomore
Jack Smart and freshman Nicholas Veazie pulled off two impressive victories. After trailing two Hawk swimmers for much of the 400 IM event, Smart gained ground during the final two strokes of the race – the breast and free, both his strengths – to win in 4:24.31 bringing a large Vassar crowed to its feet.
"That's not an easy race and Jack actually swam the second 50 meters of the breaststroke portion faster than the first," explained Kueterman. "He was really locked in mentally and was able to hold on and finish strong."
Veazie pulled out a close win of his own in the 100 Fly, winning in 57.53 to narrowly edge the second place New Paltz swimmer who finished in 57.85. Veazie also placed second in the 200 Free (1:51.29).
Freshman
Mathue Duhaney nearly took home a win of his own in the 50 Free, narrowly out-touched by his New Paltz rival to finish second with a time of 23.11, just .15 seconds off the winning time. Although New Paltz swam the 100 Breast as an exhibition, the Brewers swam well in the event with the top two times, as Smart recorded the fastest time at 1:01.73, followed by senior
Jeremy Shiman (1:04.13). Shiman recorded a second place finish in the 100 Back (57.25).
Sophomore diver
Greg Sullivan coming off a record-breaking performance against Pace University on Friday evening in which he broke his own Vassar records in the 1-meter and 3-meter continued the trend on Saturday. Not even 24 hours after setting a new 3-meter record, Sullivan set the bar even higher with a score of 334.05, surpassing his Friday score of 323.84. Sullivan also won the 1-meter with a score of 272.85.
"Having such a great crowd of family and alums was so helpful today," said Kueterman. "It really motivated our guys to have that kind of support, and it says a lot about the character of our team to have so many people want to come out and cheer for them."
