POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 20, 2009) – Behind a balanced effort with nine individual wins and a sweep of the relays, the Vassar College women's swim-dive team defeated Pace University, 174-118, on Friday evening at Kresge Pool.

The Brewers move to 2-1 and host SUNY New Paltz on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the second portion of this weekend's back-to-back meets.

“They swam so well tonight,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. “We had so many people put forth huge efforts and it's great for them to see all their hard work paying off.”

Vassar kicked off the evening with a win in the 200 Medley Relay as freshman Shannon Sara, sophomore Caroline Shannon, junior Samantha Jones, and senior Jordana Jantze recorded the winning time of 1:57.20. The Brewers then put an exclamation point on the meet as the 200 Free Relay team of junior Meg McCarty, freshman Sydnie Alquist, freshman Alexandra Hughes, and Jantze won the final event with a time of 1:47.09.

In between the relay wins, Jones led Vassar with three individual wins, in the 100 Back (1:02.78), 50 Free (26.28), and 200 Back (2:18.91). Sara earned victories in the 200 Free (1:59.81) and 500 Free (5:22.12), both personal bests. Coming off an illness, Shannon took home wins in the 100 Breast (1:12.40) and 200 Breast (2:35.33). Sophomore Amy Entwisle set a personal best in the 1,000 Free with a winning time of 11:50.19, and freshman Alexandra Damon made it a 1-2 Vassar finish with a time of 12:11.65. Freshman Sydnie Alquist picked up her first collegiate win in the 100 Fly (1:05.47), followed closely by McCarty (1:05.52).

“We saw really phenomenal swimming tonight, and to go 1-2 in the 1,000 Free and 100 Fly shows our depth,” said Kueterman.
