POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 20, 2009) – Highlighted by two record-breaking performances from sophomore diver Greg Sullivan, the Vassar College men's swim-dive team picked up a convincing 173-73 win over Pace University on Friday evening at Kresge Pool.

The Brewers improve to 2-1 and will host the second half of their back-to-back weekend, with SUNY New Paltz on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

“This was a great win for us, a strong, collective team effort,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. “They came off another great week of practice and stepped up in their first home meet.”

Sullivan picked up NCAA qualifying scores in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, in the process breaking his own Vassar records. Sullivan scored a 290.32 to win the 1-meter, breaking his previous record of 289.65. In the 3-meter, Sullivan scored a 323.84, destroying his old record of 306.83, and recording the second of two necessary NCAA qualifying scores in the event.

“Greg had the meet of his life,” said diving coach Tom Albright. “He's building on where he was last year. He didn't lose a step over the summer and came back and worked really hard, especially as we've been adding more difficult dives to increase his level of difficulty.”

The Brewers collected individual wins in eight events, led by two wins apiece from senior Jeremy Shiman, sophomore Jack Smart, and freshman Nicholas Veazie. Shiman picked up wins in the 100 Back (57.20) and 200 Back (2:06.68), Smart took home wins in the 100 Breast (1:04.56) and 200 Breast (2:16.77), and Veazie won the 200 Fly (2:08.19) and 500 Free (5:09.35). Although Vassar swam the 200 IM as an exhibition, Veazie had the top time in that event as well (2:10.43). Junior Alistair Hall won the 1,000 Free (11:13.47) and freshman Mathue Duhaney took first in the 50 Free (23.15). Hall also gave Vassar a 1-2 finish in the 200 Back, finishing behind Shiman in a time of 2:08.18.

Although Vassar swam the 200 Free Relay as an exhibition, the team of Duhaney, sophomore Dustin Molina, freshman Dylan Tully and Shiman recorded an impressive time of 1:31.50, not far off the 2009 Vassar record of 1:29.05.

“Everyone swam so well tonight,” said Kueterman. “It's a good confidence booster going into New Paltz tomorrow.”
