Men's Swim-Dive Performs Well in Loss to RPI

Results

TROY, NY (November 14, 2009) – Swimming against a perennially talented Rensselaer squad, the Vassar College men's swimming and diving team dropped a 184-109 decision on Saturday, but the Brewers showed improvement with many dropped times.

The Brewers fall to 1-1 and will host back-to-back meets this upcoming weekend, with Pace University on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and SUNY New Paltz on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

“Across the board we had a lot of people who dropped times from this week to last week,” said interim head coach Paul Kueterman. “Even though we didn't get the win it was a really promising performance”

Freshman Nicholas Veazie, last week's Liberty League Rookie of the Week, had another solid day, with wins in the 100 Back (57.33) and 200 Back (2:04.62), and a second place finish in the 200 Fly (2:15.48).

“Nick has stepped up in the last two meets and it's so great to see his hard work paying off,” said Kueterman. “Not only that, he's a great teammate, always cheering on and motivating his teammates and the women's team as well.”

Sophomore Jack Smart, the Liberty League Performer of the Week last week, took home two wins of his own, in the 100 Breast (1.01.60) and 200 Breast (2:17.61). Smart also placed second in the 200 IM (2:04.04).

Sophomore diver Greg Sullivan took home wins in the 1-meter (254.10) and 3-meter (286.05) events. In the 3-meter, Sullivan notched one of two necessary NCAA qualifying scores.

“We added another dive to increase his degree of difficulty and that's what took him over the top tonight,” said diving coach Tom Albright. “I'm glad he's got a qualifying score so early. Now he just needs one more in the 3-meter, and two in the 1-meter. We're right on schedule to do that.”

Freshman Mathue Duhaney pulled out an exciting win in the 50 Free, out-touching his RPI opponent for an impressive time of 22.98. The Brewers went 1-2 in the 200 Back as senior Jeremy Shiman followed Smart's win with a second place finish in 2:09.63.
