Results

NEW YORK, NY (January 31, 2009) – Going up against a strong New York University men's swim-dive squad, Vassar College dropped a 160-117 decision on Saturday. Vassar freshman diver Gregory Sullivan (Cranbury, NJ/Peddie School) swept the diving events and continued to rewrite the record books, setting a new school record in the 3 Meter dive, as well as notching one of two necessary NCAA qualifying scores.

The Brewers fall to 2-5 and will compete in their final dual as they host SUNY Maritime Academy on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Having lost just one meet all year, New York University improves to 7-1-1.

Sullivan scored a 306.83 on the 3 Meter in six rounds to break the old record of 278.40, set by graduated senior Andrew Wood in 2008. On Tuesday, against Montclair State University, Sullivan broke both 1 Meter diving records, setting a new school record of 269.60 points for six rounds, and 448.30 for 11 rounds. Sullivan also won the 1 Meter dive with a score of 261.82.

“He almost owns the record book for us,” said diving coach Tom Albright. “What's really enjoyable is to see him start to understand just what his talents are. With each meet he's maturing into the kind of diver who will make Vassar proud over the next four years.”

Other highlights for the Brewers against such a strong Violet squad were performances by seniors Tom Liu (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) and John Alaimo (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee). Liu won the 100 Yard Breaststroke in a time of 1:00.68, while Alaimo notched a victory in the 200 Yard Backstroke in a time of 2:02.40. Freshman Jack Smart (Honolulu, HI/Punahou School) won the 200 Yard IM in 2:07.37.
Alaimo also placed second in the 200 Yard Fly (2:02.15) and Liu finished second in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:16.35).
