Women's Fencing: Just Short Against NYU, Columbia

By Bruce Gillman
Head Coach

NEW YORK, NY (February 13, 2008) -- The Vassar women faced some difficult bouts against Columbia and NYU last night. Outstanding fencers on the day were Julie Carlsen (Freshman, Sabre ,4-2) and Sophie Courser (Freshman, Epee, 3-3).

Round 1 – Vassar 3 – Columbia 24

The Columbia women were just really good. Captain Emily Frederiksen was able to pull of a great win against Emily Jacobson and Julie Carlsen added another late sabre win. Foilist Jackie Kory also earned one win. It was a very frustrating round for epeeist Sophie Courser as she lost all three of her bouts by one touch at 4-5.

Round 2 – Vassar 10 – NYU 17

The Vassar foil squad again had lots of trouble with a tough NYU squad. They beat us in December and again last night. Vassar foil went 0-9. That was too bad because both epee and sabre pulled off 5-4 squad victories over NYU behind 3-0 performances by Sophie Courser and Julie Carlsen.

Vassar Women's Fencing next goes to Dartmouth College for the New England Championships on Sunday.
