HIGHLAND, NY (January 21, 2008) -- Vassar Women's Fencing Team came back from the semester break ready and raring to go, winning all four of their matches at the West Point Invitational.
Outstanding fencers on the day for the Vassar Women's Fencing Team were Sophie Courser (freshman, epee 7-2), Emily Frederiksen (senior, sabre 8-1), Erica Seigneur (junior, sabre 10-1), Julie Carlsen (freshman, sabre 9-3), Kristina Poznan (senior, foil 6-2), Melissa Lee (sophomore, foil 6-1), and Jackie Kory (freshman, foil 7-1).
Round 1 – Vassar 18- FDU 9
The last time Vassar faced FDU was two years ago at West Point, where we lost. This meeting was a bit different. FDU was without a foil squad, so gave up 9 bouts to us, which allowed us to substitute some of our reserve fencers in epee and sabre to get them some experience. Epee therefore went 2-7 against a pretty strong FDU squad, but Sabre rolled at 7-2.
Round 2 – Vassar 16 – Hunter 11
Hunter's women's team has been getting steadily stronger each year. We beat them twice last year, but it was harder the 2nd time and noy easy yesterday. Foil and Sabre both went 6-3, but epee had some trouble, only going 4-5.
Round 3 – Vassar 17 – Army 10
Two years ago we lost to the Army women. This year, although they had a strong epee squad and a competitive sabre squad, their foil squad was no match for ours. Vassar women's foil was undefeated, going 9-0. Sabre edged Army 5-4 and epee continued having a bad day only managing a 3-6 record in that round.
Round 4 – BYE
Round 5 – Vassar 18 – Stevens 9
Stevens was another team that we lost to at our last meeting, two years ago. We did much better this time around. The epee squad continued to have problems going 3-6, but foil did well at 6-3 and sabre rolled with Emily Frederiksen, Erica Seigneur, and Julie Carlsen all going 3-0 for a 9-0 Vassar sabre victory in that round.
The next match for the Vassar Women's fencing team will be at Yale on Wednesday, January 23.
