Women's Fencing Holds It Own At Tough Princeton Invitational

PRINCETON, NJ (December 3, 2007) -- The Vassar Women's Team came up empty against Princeton, Harvard, Penn State, UNC, and NYU this Saturday. There were some good individual performances and one nice squad win to break up a hard day.

Outstanding fencers on the day for the Vassar Women's Fencing Team were Sophie Courser (freshman, epee 8-7) and Jackie Kory (freshman, foil 7-8).

Round 1 – Vassar 4 – Penn State 23

Penn State is the defending NCAA Champion. In fact, they have won 10 times. Sophie Courser had two great wins in epee. Jackie Kory and Melissa Lee were able to take one bout each in foil.

Round 2 – Vassar 8 – University of North Carolina 19

This was only the second time we have ever fenced UNC in a dual match. We lost to them in the Philadelphia Invitational last year. They had tough sabre and epee squads this year. Foil managed to go 4-5 with Jackie Kory winning all three of her bouts, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Round 3 – Vassar 7 - New York University 20

Sabre had a pretty good round, going 4-5 with Julie Carlsen getting 2 wins, but NYU was pretty overwhelming in foil and epee this year.

Round 4 – Vassar 9 – Harvard 18

Vassar Epee actually had a squad victory 5-4 in this match. Sophie Courser had two vistories, but in addition Freshman walkon Domino Gehred-O'Connell also came away with 2 victories in her first ever fencing competition. Sophomore Jacinthe Sasson-Yenor also had a victory and narrowly lost another bout in that round. Foil and Sabre had a very tough time against Harvard, going 1-8 and 3-6 respectively.

Round 5 – Vassar 6 – Princeton 21

Vassar really had nothing left for IFA opponent Princeton. Sophie Courser (Epee) and Jackie Kory (Foil) managed 2 wins each.

The next match for the Vassar Women's Team will be at West Point on Sunday, January 20,, 2008 against Army, Hunter, NJIT, Stevens, and FDU.
