Michelle Walsh has announced that
Meredith Mesaris has stepped down from her position as the Brewers' Head Women's Basketball Coach after two successful seasons to accept the same position at Tufts University.
Mesaris was hired at Vassar prior to the 2023-24 season and made an immediate impact on the sidelines in Poughkeepsie. The Brewers went 25-3 in her first season, including a 21-game winning streak. The Brewers cruised through the conference schedule, winning 17 of its 18 regular season games, and toppled Union and Skidmore in the Liberty League Championship to claim the Brewers' first league title since 2014.
As a follow up in 2024-25, the Brewers posted a second 20-win season under Mesaris, going 21-7 overall and 15-3 against league rivals. Vassar earned the second seed in the Liberty League Championship and after a semifinal victory over Skidmore took to the road to upset top seeded Ithaca in the Final to secure the Brewers fifth Liberty League title and won back-to-back crowns for the first time since 2011 and 2012.
Over two seasons in Poughkeepsie Mesaris produced a 46-10 overall record and a 32-4 mark against leaguer rivals. Mesaris mentored six First Team All-Liberty League performers in two years, with
Tova Gelb,
Julia Harvey and
Sierra McDermed all tabbed First Team selections each of the last two seasons. Each of the trio went on to score their 1,000
th career points under Mesaris in the 2024-25 campaign.
In 2024-25, Gelb had a standout season under Mesaris' tutelage earning Liberty League Player and Defensive Player of the Year honors, D3hoops.com Region III Player of the Year accolades, WBCA and D3hoops.com All-American recognition and a College Sports Communicators Academic All-American citation.
Following the 2023-24 season, Mesaris and Assistant Coach
Morgan McCrea were tabbed the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year with Mesaris adding D3hoops.com Region III Coach of the Year and WBCA Thirty under 30 honors.
A national search for Mesaris' replacement will commence immediately.
