Poughkeepsie, NY - Vassar College Baseball pitching coach
Beth Greenwood was selected in the third round of the inaugural Women's Pro Baseball League by Boston on Thursday evening in the first ever WPBL Draft. This historic draft marks the first time in history that women's professional baseball players heard their names called in a draft by one of the league's four founding teams.
Greenwood has been a member of the USA Women's National Baseball team program since 2018 where she was on the USA Baseball National Development Roster/Top 40 from 2018-22 before making the Top 20 National Team roster in 2023 and is still on the roster currently. In 2023, Team USA went undefeated in the World Cup Qualifier and went on to win Silver in the 2024 World Cup, which boosted their WBSC World Ranking to second place.
Greenwood was a two-year baseball student athlete at the University of Rochester where she made history as the first American female to catch in a NCAA baseball game in 2021 and was the first female baseball player in Liberty League history.
Greenwood enters her second season as the pitching coach on the Vassar staff as the Brewers finished last season at 14-19 overall and 5-9 against Liberty League rivals in her first season on the staff.
The journey to this point began months ago. 600+ players from 10 different countries attended open tryouts in August at Nationals Park, home to MLB's Washington Nationals. From that pool along with official video submissions, the league compiled its first official draft-eligible list of more than 120 players, representing the most talented women's baseball players in the world today.
The Draft was completed in six rounds, with each of the four teams selecting five players per round. That means 20 players are chosen in each round, 120 players total. To ensure competitive balance, the Draft will operate in a snake-order format: the team that picks last in one turn will pick first in the next. The initial draft order will be determined by random draw.
Boston closed the inaugural WPBL Draft by securing one of the league's most well-rounded and globally diverse groups of players. With impact arms, reliable infield defenders, dynamic outfielders, and an impressive mix of young standouts and seasoned veterans, the club built a roster that reflects depth, balance, and long-term competitiveness.
