Baseball Outslugged Against Penn State-Abington

Brewers return to action on Thursday against Wheaton

Davenport, FL - The Vassar College Baseball team battled in an offensive slugfest on Tuesday afternoon as the Brewers fell 13-11 to Penn State-Abington in the fourth of nine games at the RussMatt Invitational with first year Jack Johnson launched his first career collegiate home run along with junior Noah Stockman lifting his first homer of the season.

Vassar's record drops to 1-5 overall while the Nittany Lions improve to 7-3 on the season.

How It Happened
  • Penn State-Abington exploded for eight runs in the top of the first inning, led by a bases-clearing triple from Josh Daly and RBI base hits from Zach DiMario, Aqual Chapman and Zach Salsbery.
  • Vassar trimmed the lead to 8-2 in the bottom half of the inning following a RBI triple from senior Jensen Bergman and a RBI single from first year Aidan Annello.
  • The Brewers got within three in the third inning as Annello singled home another run along with a sacrifice fly from sophomore Dash Edwards and Annello later scored on an error.
  • Vassar came all the way back to take the lead in the fourth inning behind a RBI hit by pitch of Annello, a bases loaded walk of Edwards, a sacrifice fly from first year Eric Wallick and Stockman's RBI single gave the Brewers a 9-8 lead.
  • The Nittany Lions regained the lead in the sixth inning after a RBI single from Jaxson Horvath, a RBI triple from Andrew Charzewski and a fielder's choice that plated Charzewski.
  • PSU-Abington tacked on two runs in the seventh after Salsbery scored on a throwing error and Domenic Lotruglio knocked in Mike Brocco on a RBI double to make it 13-9.
  • Stockman launched his first homer of the season in the bottom of the seventh to get Vassar back within three.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Johnson led off with a pinch-hit moonshot homer down the left field line but reliever Zachary Dennis retired the next three hitters to close the 13-11 victory.
For The Brewers
  • Annello finished with two hits, three RBI and two runs scored while Stockman recorded two hits, including a homer, and two runs batted in.
  • Johnson added first collegiate homer along with Bergman notching a triple, a RBI and two runs scored.
  • First year Ethan Fox-Fernandez, first year Noah Townsend and first year Jack Biskupiak all added a hit.
  • Junior Patrick Mill took the loss in relief as he went 1.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and struck out one.
  • Senior Cade Terada-Herzer and first year Noah Sternberg both tossed two scoreless innings of relief.
For The Nittany Lions
  • Daly led the way with a 3-for-5 day with three RBI and two doubles while Horvath and Salsbery both recorded three hits, two runs scored and a RBI.
  • Charzewski registered two hits, two runs scored and a run batted in along with Lotruglio knocking in three runs.
  • Chapman and DiMario also added a hit and a RBI.
  • Jack Wright earned the win in relief after tossing 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, one run, one walk and struck out five.
  • Dennis picked up the save as he threw the final two innings, giving up two hits, one run and struck out four.
