Baseball Toppled Twice on Day One of RussMatt Invitational

Winter Haven, FL - The Vassar College Baseball team began its nine-game swing in the Sunshine State on Sunday as the Brewers fell 9-5 and 17-0 in a doubleheader against Saint Joseph's College of Maine at the RussMatt Invitational.

Game 1 - SJC 9 VC 5 (7 innings)

How It Happened
  • The Monks took the lead in the top of the first inning as Nick Villano's two-RBI double knocked in Nic Frink and Jared Wilheim to go ahead 2-0.
  • Vassar cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the first on a RBI single from first year Jack Biskupiak to plate classmate Jack Johnson.
  • The Brewers earned a 5-2 lead in the third inning as first year Aidan Annello's two-RBI single scored Johnson and sophomore Dash Edwards followed by a two-RBI single from first year Noah Townsend to push across Annello and first year Garrison Sobo.
  • Saint Joseph's put up a crooked number in the top of the fifth as the Monks hung six runs on the board, capped by a RBI triple from Ryan Kastle, to go back in front 8-5.
  • Nick Brindle's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning added an insurance run for Saint Joseph's for the final 9-5 score.
For The Brewers
  • Johnson finished the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Townsend was 3-for-3 with two runs batted in.
  • Annello added a hit, a run scored and two RBI along with Biskupiak knocking in a run with a base hit.
  • Junior Will Darrell started on the mound as he went four-plus innings, allowing four hits, four runs (two earned), three walks and struck out three.
  • Senior Cade Terada-Herzer took the loss in relief after throwing one inning, allowing two hits and four unearned runs.
For The Monks
  • Villano went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored while Jake Carlisle posted two hits and two runs scored.
  • Luke Doughty, Kastle and Vinny O'Leary each added a hit while O'Leary and Doughty both scored a run.
  • William Dionne earned the victory as he threw six innings and gave up eight hits, five runs, five walks and struck out 11.
  • Thomas O'Koniewski added a scoreless inning of relief and struck out two.
Game 2 - SJC 17 VC 0 (6 innings)

How It Happened
  • SJC pushed ahead two runs in the first inning on a RBI groundout from Frink to score Kastle and a RBI double from Villano.
  • The Monks added three runs in the fourth on a bases-clearing triple from Kastle to make it 4-0 after four.
  • Saint Joseph's closed the game with an 11 run inning in the sixth.
For The Brewers
  • First year Kieran McGrath and sophomore Miller Young each recorded a hit.
  • Bergman and Townsend both drew a walk.
  • Senior Addison Lee suffered the loss as he tossed three innings, allowing one hit, two runs (one earned), two walks and struck out seven.
For The Monks
  • Kastle registered a 2-for-2 game with four RBI, three runs scored and two walks.
  • Frink added two hits and three runs driven in while Matt Elwell and Villano recorded a hit and notched a RBI.
  • Paul Donnelly tossed a complete game shutout as he went the full six innings, giving up two hits, two walks and struck out nine.

  • Vassar continues its action at the RussMatt Invitational against Albertus Magnus tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
