Vassar Tripped Up By Wheaton

Brewers will take on Lesley on Saturday evening

Winter Haven, FL - The Vassar College Baseball team was unable to overcome a slow start on Thursday afternoon as the Brewers fell 11-0 to Wheaton (MA) in seven innings at the RussMatt Invitational. Vassar's record drops to 1-6 on the season while the Lyons improve to 5-1 overall.

How It Happened
  • Wheaton struck for eight runs in the first inning as Declan Lush's bases loaded walk pushed a run across followed by a grand slam from Brayden Lewis.
  • Ray Toth's RBI double, Nick Giangregorio's RBI triple and a RBI groundout from Marcus Rodrigues gave the Lyons a 8-0 lead.
  • Wheaton added two runs in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Logan Downey and a RBI base hit from Giangregorio.
  • The Lyons closed the scoring with a RBI single from Levi Hessel in the fifth inning.
  • Vassar's biggest threat came in the fifth following a leadoff single from first year Ethan Fox-Fernandez and first year Aidan Annello drew a walk to push runners to first and second with no outs.
  • Wheaton reliever Dylan Matis entered with one out and struck out the final two hitters in the inning to preserve the shutout.
For The Brewers
  • Senior Jensen Bergman went 2-for-2 with a double and a walk while Fox-Fernandez added a hit.
  • First year Jack Sadowski took the loss as he allowed four hits and seven runs.
  • Sophomore Zach Berner threw a strong three innings in relief as he tossed three innings, two runs (one earned), two walks and struck out two.
  • First year Matt Calamari threw a hitless inning and struck out three out of the pen.
For The Lyons
  • Downey finished 3-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in while Giangregorio knocked in two runs and tallied a double.
  • Lewis drove in four runs on a homer along with Rodrigues and Toth posting two hits, a RBI and a run scored.
  • Greg Strite earned the win after going 4.2 innings, allowing two hits, no runs, three walks and struck out five.
  • Matis punched out the two hitters he faced while Jack Kelleher-Mochak and Cole Kelleher each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
