North Wins Gold for Men's Fencing at the Big One

Sophomore takes home title after finishing runner-up a season ago

Northampton, MA - Sophomore Alexander North took home gold in epee at the Big One on Saturday along with classmate Devan McCarthy medaling with a third place finish in sabre in the first competition of the season for the Vassar College Men's Fencing team.

Epee
  • Pool Round
    • North posted a perfect 6-0 round in pool #1 to score a second place overall finish to advance to the direct elimination round.
    • First year Jing Seto scored six consecutive victories in pool #4 to finish third overall after the opening round.
    • Sophomore Harper Jamison earned five wins in pool #6 to rank 13th heading into the elimination tableau.
    • Sophomore Adam Elkashef recorded a victory in pool #8.
  • Direct Elimination
    • Jamison battled Evan Vezmar (Tufts) in the opening round and fell 15-4.
    • Seto dropped a narrow 15-12 decision in the first round against ZIchun Wang (Brandeis).
    • North began his run to the gold medal with victories over Alex Buheis (Tufts), Hunter Yu (Brandeis) and David Zaydman (Northeastern) to advance to the semifinals.
    • Following a victory in the semifinals due to a withdraw, North toppled Dylan Schroeder (Brandeis) to earn the first place overall finish.
Foil
  • Pool Round
    • First year Aaron Taplin collected a victory in pool #5.
    • Sophomore Alexander Gobbo secured five wins in pool #6 to rank 11th overall.
    • Sophomore Nico Lotto battled in six matchups in pool #7.
    • Sophomore Kahlil Salome earned four victories in pool #9 to finish tied for 24th.
    • First year Declan Gill recorded three wins in pool #8 to reach the elimination round.
  • Direct Elimination
    • Salome earned a win in the opening bracket to advance to the final tableau.
    • Gill collected a victory over Dea Marion Brown (Boston University) before falling to Jake Amend (Sacred Heart).
    • Salome advanced to the Round of 16 with a win over ninth-seeded Thomas Ligh before dropping a decision to eight-seeded Luc Kong (Brandeis).
    • Gobbo battled Elliot Davidson (Northeastern) in the first round and fell 15-12.
Sabre
  • Pool Round
    • First year Neal Cusumano collected five victories in pool #2 to finish 19th overall folllowing the pool round.
    • Junior Cezar Mahmoud earned a win over Riley Nelson (Bowdoin) in pool #4.
    • First year Luca Savoy picked up five wins in pool #6 to rank 16th heading into the elimination round.
    • First year Jason Jensby scored five victories in pool #7 to finish 12th overall.
    • First year Judah Govine tallied two wins in pool #10 to advance to the first elimination tableau.
    • McCarthy posted a perfect 6-0 round to rank second overall heading into the elimination round.
    • Sophomore Karthik Shankar went undefeated at 5-0 to rank tied for seventh after the pool round.
  • Direct Elimination
    • Cusumano defeated David Jin (Sacred Heart) to advance to the final tableau.
    • Govine scored a win over Gabriel Hurez-Soler (WPI) before falling to Connor Huang (Tufts).
    • Savoy defeated Jacob Berger (Northeastern) to reach the round of 16 before dropping a 15-9 decision to top-seeded Tolga Aslan (Sacred Heart).
    • Shankar toppled Jacob Benson (Brandeis) before losing to Zachary Tong (MIT) 15-10.
    • Jensby fell in the round of 32 to Alex Piwowar (Brandeis) 15-9.
    • Cusumano upended 14th-seed Manatsaran Janyong (Boston University) before falling to third-seeded Oliver Lindholm (Sacred Heart) 15-10.
    • McCarthy opened his run to the semifinals with wins over Aidan O'Neil (UNH) and Jonathan Morales (Sacred Heart).
    • The sophomore then defeated Eric Wang (MIT) to advance to the semis before falling to Lindholm 15-8.
