Troy, NY – The Vassar College Men's Tennis team had four student-athletes earn All-Liberty League postseason honors it was announced on Tuesday. Senior
Jay Wong (Jong Kong) was named First Team All-Conference in singles with
Fernando Bauermeister (Winter Park, FL) and
Eugene Lee (Chico, CA) collecting Second Team All-League recognition in doubles play. Bauermeister and Lee joined
Benjamin Almquist (Union Pier, MI) as All-Liberty League Honorable Mention selections in singles competition.
Wong put together a strong season for the Brewers playing primarily at the top singles flight. Wong posted a 10-9 record in singles play with eight victories coming at the first singles position. Wong finished the season ranked fourth in the Liberty League with eight triumphs at the top flight and was third in the league with a 6-2 mark in singles play in conference play. Wong opened the season with wins in the first three contests of the season and closed the regular season with four wins over the final five matches for the Brewers.
Bauermeister and Lee were teamed as doubles partners six times with the duo splitting six matches at the top position. The pair went 2-1 against league rivals over the course of the regular season and added an 8-4 win for the Brewers against Ithaca in the First Round of the Liberty League Championship.
In singles play, Bauermeister won four times at two different positions for the Brewers, earning league victories over St. Lawrence and Skidmore. Bauermeister split two matches that completed in the Liberty League Championship, scoring a 6-4, 6-1 third singles win against Hobart, helping Vassar to a 5-4 semifinal victory over the Statesmen.
Lee concluded a standout rookie season with a team-high 13 singles victories, winning matches at the second, third and fourth positions. Lee closed out the 2023-24 season with a 2-2 record at second singles, a 7-1 mark at the third slot and a 4-1 record at fourth singles. Lee won each of the last four matches of the season that concluded for the Brewers, including a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ithaca in the First Round of the Liberty League Championship and a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Hobart in the Semifinal Round. Lee posted the highest winning percentage at third singles in the league at .875.
Almquist finished off the 2023-24 season with seven victories, winning two at the second slot, one at third singles and four times at the fourth position. Almquist won five straight matches for Vassar from March 30 through April 20 and closed the year with the fifth highest singles win total on the team.
Vassar finished the 2023-24 season with a 14-6 overall record and a 6-2 mark in conference play. Vassar topped Ithaca and Hobart in the Liberty League Championship, advancing to its first league title match since 2013.
