North Reaches Epee Final at the Big One

Brewers tally multiple strong finishes in each weapon

Northampton, MA - First year Alexander North reached the finals in epee at the Big One on the campus of Smith College on Saturday afternoon for the Vassar College Men's Fencing team.

Epee

Pool Round
- First year Harper Jamison earned four victories in pool #2 to earn the 33 seed and earn the 16 seed in the first tableau.
- First year Alexander North posted an undefeated 6-0 mark in pool #3 to earn the three seed and a bye into the main tableau.
- First year Sam Sosnick scored three wins in pool #11 to earn the 39 seed and earn the 23 seed in the first tableau.
Direct Elimination
- Sosnick fell in the opening bout against 42 seed Michael Herrick (UMass).
- Jamison collected wins over 49 seed Andrew Gu (Williams) and 17 seed Haixu Wang (Boston U) to advance to the round of 32. Jamison fell to 5 seed Stephen Scapicchio (Sacred Heart) in the round of 32.
- North began his run to the finals with a triumph over Rishi Shiv (MIT) in the round of 32 before defeating Evan Vezmar (Tufts) in the round of 16.
- The first year then defeated 11 seed David Bailey (Sacred Heart) before earning a victory over two seed Benjamin Fleckenstein (Sacred Heart) to earn a berth to the finals. North fell to MIT's Wilson Zhu in the final match.

Foil

Pool Round
- Senior Brady Traugot opened the day with five victories in pool #2 to earn the 17 seed and the top seed in the first tableau.
- First year Kahlil Salome earned two victories in pool #4 to earn the 59 seed and the 43 seed in the first tableau.
- First year Alexander Gobbo collected five wins in pool #6 to earn the 19 seed and the three seed in the first tableau.
- First year Ethan Capra scored five wins in pool #8 to earn the T-20 seed and the T-4 seed in the first tableau.
- First year Hanley Tapia tallied three victories in pool #10 to earn the 49 seed and the 33 seed in the first tableau.
Direct Elimination
- Salome battled 22 seed Jake Amend (Sacred Heart) in the first round and fell 15-13.
- Tapia earned a victory over 31-T James Grady (New Hampshire) before falling to Traugot in the second round.
- Traugot defeated Tapia to advance to the round of 32 before falling to 16 seed Tony Xiao (MIT) in the round of 32.
- Capra earned a bye before tallying a victory over 36 seed Sam Wilson (Bowdoin) to advance to the round of 32. The first year fell in the round of 32 to 12 seed Gleb Syomichev (Sacred Heart).
- Gobbo earned a bye and then collected a win over 34-T Ian Hagglund (WPI) to advance to the round of 32. Gobbo defeated 14-T seed Giovanni Chessa (Sacred Heart) to move to the round of 16 before falling to third seed Varun Gupta (Northeastern).

Sabre

Pool Round
- Sophomore Cezar Mahmoud collected two victories in pool #4 to earn the 55 seed and the 39 seed in the first tableau.
- First year Karthik Shankar earned five wins in pool #10 to earn the 10 seed and a bye into the main tableau.
- First year Devan McCarthy posted an undefeated 5-0 mark in pool #11 to earn the nine seed and a bye into the main tableau.
Direct Elimination
- Mahmoud fell in the opening round to 26 seed Darian Seward (Boston U).
- McCarthy toppled 24 seed Duncan Keefe (Northeastern) to advance to the round of 16 before falling to 7-T Alexander Lo (Dartmouth).
- Shankar earned a victory over 23 seed Coleman Keady (New Hampshire) in the round of 32 before dropping a 15-12 decision to 7-T Anthony Rabnikov (Brandeis) in the round of 16.

Vassar will host its first meet of the season next Sunday at 10:00 a.m. at Walker Field House.
