CLEVELAND, OH - The Vassar College Men's Fencing team returned to action for the first time in 2023 and went 4-1 at the Cleveland State Invitational in Cleveland, Ohio. The Brewers foil squad led the way with a 34-11 record on the day while the sabre squad went 27-18 overall and the epee squad went 25-20.
In round one, the Brewers earned a 18-9 victory over Denison and were led by the foil squad who earned a 7-2 bout victory. Freshmen
Federico La Rosa and
Isaiah Kim as well as sophomore
Brady Traugot each tallied two wins at foil. Five players earned a victory at epee as seniors
Jack Plumer,
Spencer Emerson and
Alexander Moyse along with sophomore
Eli Weise and freshman
Brian Li earned a win at epee. Freshman
Fernando Panepinto Hattori went 3-0 at sabre with seniors
Conor Travaglione and
Tian Hahn picking up a win and sophomore
Justin Lederer also earned a victory.
Vassar earned another victory in round two as they defeated the host Cleveland State 16-11. Freshman
Oliver Berger went 3-0 at sabre for the Brewers while Lederer added two wins and Travaglione tallied a victory. La Rosa, Traugot and Kim each earned two victories in foil for Vassar while Li lead the epee squad with three victories and Weise earned the other win in the bout.
The Brewers cruised to a 26-1 victory in the third round against Detroit Mercy as the foil and sabre squads each went undefeated. Travaglione, Berger and sophomore
Noah Rudnet won three times at foil while freshman
Ulysses Bergel, sophomore
Sean Fisher and Traugot also went 3-0 each. Moyse went 3-0 at epee for Vassar while Emerson and Plumer added two wins each along with a victory from freshman
Dariush Modaressi.
Vassar tallied its fourth victory of the day in round four in a 15-12 triumph over Lawrence with the foil squad earning a 7-2 bout victory. Kim went 3-0 at foil while La Rosa and Traugot each picked up two victories. Li and Weise led the way for epee with two wins apiece along with Plumer adding a win. Berger earned two victories at sabre and Travaglione tallied one win for the Brewers.
VC took its only loss of the day in the final round against Incarnate Word by a 11-16 margin. Traugot and La Rosa had two victories apiece for the Brewers at foil along with one win by Kim and Berger, senior
Nicholas Gayle and Travaglione each had a win at sabre. Li finished their strong day at epee with two victories and Plumer recorded a win for VC.
Vassar returns to action next weekend at the second Northeast Conference Multimeet at Boston College. The meet against the Eagles, Tufts, MIT, Drew, Brandeis and Brown will begin at 10:00 a.m.
