HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Vassar College men's tennis team opened the 2022-23 season on Saturday, competing at the Haverford Fall Invitational. The Brewers squared off against opponents from Hamilton and the host Fords in the opening round of action.
The Brewers opened play against the Fords, kicking things off with a solid round of doubles action. Leading off was an 8-5 win as Vassar rookies
Fernando Bauermeister and
Nolan Kubiak posted the victory over Haverford's Stefan Johnson and Justin Minerva.
Next up saw sophomore
Arnav Agostinho and rookie
Pedro Cattaruzzi record an 8-2 win over Jason Edmunds and Adam Chow. The Fords got one back as James McKenzie and Aiden Kim notched an 8-6 win over Vassar junior
Benjamin Almquist and freshman
Miles Sondergaard Jensen.
Rounding out doubles action was the duo of sophomore
James Balon and rookie
Russell Oh bested Abhinav Nallapareddy and Kirin Eicher by an 8-3 score.
Singles action saw Bauermeister notch a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Andreas Wingert, while Kubiak was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Daniel Loder. Almquist suffered a tough loss, falling 7-5, 3-6, 5-10 to Johnson in a hard battle. Agostinho was an 0-6, 6-2, 10-3 victor against Chow, while Balon bested Minerva, 6-4, 6-4.
The action concluded in another tough battle as Eicher edged past rookie
Ethan Mantell, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 13-11.
In Vassar's second match of the day, the Brewers squared off against Hamilton College. Doubles action saw Bauermeister and Kubiak score another victory, defeating Connor Griff and Coby Feldman by a hard-fought 8-7 (8-6) margin.
Cattaruzzi and Agostinho also recorded another win as they posted an 8-7 (7-3) win against the Continentals' Anson Anderson and Lorenzo Gunningham. Next up was Mantell and rookie Sigmund Winieck as they suffered a narrow loss to Nicolas Gritz and Gianni Esposito. The action rounded out with Balon and Sondergaard Jensen notching an 8-6 victory over Mark Apsey and Matt Bartok.
In singles action, Bauermeister suffered a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Griff, while Almquist shouldered a 7-5, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Anderson. Kubiak notched a 6-4, 6-4 win over Eric Stein, as Agostinho added to the victory column for Vassar with a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 11-9 win.
Balon then bested Gritz by a 6-1, 6-2 margin, as Oh fell by a 6-1, 6-3 margin to Esposito.
Vassar is right back in action tomorrow at 10am, continuing action at the Haverford Fall Invitational against Washington College.
