POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Sophomore Vaughn Ramsey (Denver, CO) knocked in a career-high 19 kills as the Vassar men's volleyball team defeated Elms 3-2 on Wednesday evening in Kenyon Hall. The Brewers move to 15-5 overall with the win, while the Blazers slip to 11-14.
When Ramsey sent in a kill, Vassar handled the first set and took a 5-3 lead. Elms cut it to 15-11 following a kill from Carlos Mercado, but four-straight Vassar points made it 19-11. The Brewers continued to control, and van Beveren sent in the set-winning kill at 25-17.
Elms responded to take the second set 20-25 and took an early 4-9 lead after a Mercado service ace. A Ramsey kill, and a Blazers' error cut the lead to 11-13, but Elms took the following two points. A 4-0 run put the Blazers ahead 14-21. Kills by Colin Jones (San Diego, CA) and Payne Lounsbery (Long Beach, CA) cut the lead to four, and then Gavin Akoto (Justice, IL) made it 18-22. Vassar would score two more times, but Elms' Moose Perry tallied the set-winning kill for the tie.
Vassar won 25-19 in the third set. The trio of Billy Fan (Saratoga, CA), Hendrickson, and Andrew Halberg (Newark, DE) blocked an attack to push the Vassar lead to 10-5. The Brewers stayed with a comfortable lead, and Fan hit a kill to put the Brewers up 23-17. Ramsey hit a kill, and Hendrickson sealed the set win by solo blocking a Ben Laxton attack.
The fourth set was close, and Elms capitalized on the Vassar errors to take a 19-23 lead. Hendrickson cut the lead to 21-24 following a kill, but a Vassar block error tied the sets 2-2.
The Brewers used a 6-1 run to take a 13-5 lead in the extra set. Van Beveren and Ramsey put in the final two kills to end the match.
