Men's Fencing Fences at Vassar Invitational

Berger finishes 22-2 at Sabre to lead the Brewers

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Vassar College Men's Fencing team played host to the Vassar Invitational at Walker Field House on Sunday. Freshman Oliver Berger led the Brewers with a 22-2 record in Sabre for the Brewers.

The Brewers picked up a first round victory over Drew Blue 15-12 as Berger went undefeated along with freshman Federico La Rosa at foil and freshman Brian Li at epee. Sophomore Brady Traugot and freshman Isaiah Kim each added two wins at foil. Vassar earned its second victory over Hunter at 26-1 as foil's Kim, Traugot and La Rosa went 9-0 and epee went 9-0 with senior Jack Plumer, sophomore Eli Weise and senior Tom Stadnikov leading the way.

After falling to Stevens 9-18, Vassar bounced back with a 17-10 win over Stevens and was led by Sabre going 9-0 with sophomores Noah Rudnet and Justin Lederer along with Berger. Plumer went 3-0 at epee while Li added two victories. 

Before dropping the last two matches to Johns Hopkins (9-18) and Cleveland State (11-16), the Brewers picked up strong wins over Lafayette (22-5) and LIU (20-7). Berger, Rudnet and freshman Fernando Panepinto Hattori all went 3-0 at Sabre against Lafayette while LaRosa went undefeated at foil and Li and Weise each picked up three wins. Foil led the way against LIU going 9-0 behind La Rosa, Traugot and Kim while Weise and Plumer each went undefeated at epee.

The Vassar "B" squad was also in action and picked up a first round victory over Yeshiva (18-9). Rudnet and Panepinto Hattori each went 3-0 at Sabre while freshman Ulysses Bergel was undefeated at foil. Senior Spencer Emerson and Stadnikov went 3-0 at epee with freshman Dariush Modaressi earned two victories.

Vassar went 5-3 overall on the day as the epee squad went 44-28 to lead Vassar while Sabre earned an overall record of 43-29. Foil had a strong day with a 42-30 record.

The Brewers will host the Matt Lampell Invite next weekend for its final home meet of the season. The meet at Walker Field Hose is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.
