Swimming & Diving Downs Union in Road Dual Meet Action

Brewers women post 204-114 win; Vassar men earn 205-127 victory

SCHENECTADY, NY – Fresh off a dual meet victory on Friday, the Vassar women's and men's swimming & diving teams were back in the pool on Saturday, grabbing dual meet wins against Union College at Alumni Gym Pool. The Brewers women posted a 204-114 win, while the Vassar men were 205-127 winners.

Action kicked off with the 200-medley relay as the Vassar women saw seniors Jesse Ecklund and Abby Jenkins, along with juniors Lillian Lowenthal and Abby Whittington capture the win in a time of 1:54.11. The Brewers also captured second in the event as sophomores Sarah Quintana, Szofia Lewis and Alanna Muello combined with rookie Jordan Marlow for a time of 1:57.44.

In the men's event, junior Nick D'Arrigo, seniors Nikolas Pham and Max White, and rookie Ben Glazebnik were the victors with a time of 1:40.40. Vassar's other relay, comprised of senior Brandon Li, sophomore Hanlin Wang, junior Jason Albaum and rookie Hayden Ehrenfeld were third overall with a time of 1:43.32.

The women's 1,000-free was dominated by Quintana, who posted a time of 11:15.51, way ahead of second place (12:16.11), while in the men's event, junior Robbie Perot captured the solid victory with a time of 10:00.53 (10:28.64 was second). In the 200-free, freshman Maya Luongo was the winner in a time of 2:03.66, while sophomore Alejandra Robins nabbed second in 2:04.94.

In the men's 200-free, Glazebnik was the big winner with a time of 1:49.59. In the 100-backstroke, Ecklund was first to touch the wall with a mark of 1:01.05, while the men's event saw D'Arrigo post the win in 55.99.

In the 100-breast, the Brewers top women's finisher was Jenkins, who took third overall in 1:17.39. The men's side saw Pham earn runner-up in 1:04.09. Next up in the 200-butterfly, Lowenthal paced a 1-2-3 punch for the Brewers, winning in a time of 2:19.26. She was followed by junior Grace Myers and sophomore Karlie Porter in second (2:22.60) and third (2:25.96), respectively.

The men's 200-fly was won by White as he touched the wall in a time of 2:03.48. Next up was the 50-free, which was a Vassar sweep as Whittington won the women's side in 26.17, while Ehrenfeld was the men's winner in 22.45.

Diving took center stage as junior Evelyn Boyle won the women's 1-meter event with 178.27 points. On the men's 3-meter board, senior Sam Fujikawa was second overall with 166.87 points, while rookie Jacob Cerone was third with 133.80 points. Junior Ben Bragin rounded out the effort in fourth with 109.12 points.

Back in the pool, Whittington powered her way to another win, taking the 100-free event in a time of 56.67. The men's side was won by Glazebnik, who posted a time of 48.92 for the victory. Ecklund grabbed another win – this time in her signature event – claiming victory in the 200-back with a time of 2:10.51. The men's event was won by D'Arrigo as he picked up another victory in a time of 2:01.52.

The 200-breaststroke was up next as Robins earned second overall in 2:40.12, while the men's event saw Hanlin Wang take runner-up in 2:21.92. In the women's 500-free, Myers was the winner in 5:37.95, while Lowenthal took second in 5:45.55. On the men's side, Perot grabbed his second distance win, touching the wall in 4:50.85 – outpacing second-place (5:03.79) for the win.

A sweep of the 100-fly came next as Robins led a 1-2-3 finish for the women, capturing the win in 1:02.72. Luongo took second (1:02.96), while Muello was third (1:03.40). The men's event saw White earn the victory, posting a time of 55.23.

Back to diving and to the men's 1-meter board, Fujikawa paced the way in first with 200.27 points. Cerone was third overall with 163.57 points, while Bragin grabbed fourth with 118.63 points.

Returning to the pool, the first of four final events got underway with Quintana taking the victory in the 200-IM with a time of 2:17.60. Luongo grabbed second overall with 2:18.74. On the men's side, D'Arrigo was second overall in 2:06.41.

The women's 400-free relay saw a victory once again as Lowenthal, Myers, Ecklund and Muello combined for a time of 3:47.80. The men's event was also a Brewers victory as Pham, Ehrenfeld, White and Glazebnik posted a time of 3:17.77 to conclude the meet action.

Both teams return to action on January 29, hosting the Vassar Sprint Invitational at Kresge Pool. In addition to the final home meet of the 2021-22 season, the squads will also honor their senior class. Action will get underway at 1pm.
