POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar men's fencing team finished as the runner-up at the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invite on Sunday at Walker Field House. The Vassar "A" squad went 3-1 in the opening pool round against Drew (12-15), RIT (22-5), Cornell (26-1), and Binghamton (22-5). The Brewers' "B" team posted a 4-0 mark in their pool, defeating Army (22-5), RPI (16-11), Marist (24-3), and Rochester (15-12).
The "A" squad received the second seed in the tournament bracket, while the "B" team was the third seed. The "A" group defeated Binghamton 15-2 behind an 8-1 saber performance, with Conor Travaglione and Wolff Gilligan recording 3-0 marks. Justin Lederer also added a 2-1 saber performance. Foil was undefeated at 4-0, and Frank Ryan went 2-0. At epee, the group was 3-1, with Alex Moyse, Jack Plumer, and Alden Pierson Smela each going 1-0.
The "B" squad won 14-8 over RIT. The saber group led at 6-1, and Nicholas Gayle recorded a 3-0 mark, while Noah Rudnet was 2-0. Tian Hahn also added a bout victory. Despite being down a fencer, the Brewers won 5-4 in foil. Senior Chase Estes went 2-1, while Liam Inchoco was 3-0 to push the Brewers past the Tigers. The epee field split a 3-3 decision with senior Nishay Bhatnagar going 2-1, and Caleb Klein added the third win.
The two Vassar squads squared off in the next round, and the "A" group proved to be the victor by winning 13-4. The varsity foil went 9-0 against their teammates, while the saber took a 3-0 decision. The Vassar "B" epee did manage a 4-2 win against the "A," but it was not enough to advance.
The Brewers faced a challenge in the championship round against Drew. The Rangers won 14-7 and won 7-2 in foil and 4-2 in epee. Saber split 3-3. Travaglione tacked on two bout wins, while Lederer added another at the saber. A strong Rangers foil squad caused trouble for the Brewers, and only Ryan and Benjamin Lee earned victories.
Vassar next travels to Fairfield, CT for the Sacred Heart Tradition Invite on Sun. Dec. 5 at 10 a.m.
