MEDFORD, MA -Â The Vassar men's fencing squad returned to conference action this weekend, going 5-0Â at the Northeast Conference Multi-Meet #3 on Saturday. The Brewers defeated UMass (21-6), Boston University (15-12), Dartmouth (19-8), Sacred Heart (16-11), and New Hampshire (25-4).
All weapons recorded winning records with sabre leading the way at 34-11. Epee was next at 29-16, and foil was right behind at 28-17.
Two sabre fencers in Evin Heintz (Pearland, TX) and Graeme Mills (Boston, MA) went undefeated, with both posting 12-0 marks. Noe Berger (Brooklyn, NY) led the foil squad at 7-1, while Caleb Klein (Chappaqua, NY) recorded six victories. Junior Michael Jaklitsch (Saint James, NY) topped the epee squad with eight wins.
Vassar opened against UMass, going 6-3 in foil, 9-0 in epee, and 6-3 in sabre. In sabre, Heintz went 3-0, while Mills was 2-0. Foil saw Chris Gaehde (Brookline, MA) go 2-0. Klein went 2-1, and Adlai Brandt-Ogman (South Salem, NY) added one victory. Epee tallied the clean sweep with Jaklitsch, Abram Gregory (North Smithfield, RI), and Jack Plumer (Bel Air, MD), all going 3-0.
In the second round, the Brewers downed Terriers. Vassar won each weapon 5-4. Heintz tallied another 3-0 sweep at sabre, while Brandt-Ogman was 3-0 at foil. Jaklitsch and Gregory led the epee squad with two wins each.
In round three, Vassar picked up the 19-8 win over Dartmouth, as foil and sabre picked up 8- victories. The sabre group of Conor Travaglione (East Northport, NY), Heintz, and Mills all went undefeated. Foil saw Klein and Berger go 3-0, while Gaehde was 2-0.
The Brewers used a 9-0 sweep at sabre to defeat Sacred Heart in the fourth round. Heintz and Mills both won their 12th consecutive bouts to close their days, while Travglione went 3-0.
The final round was all Vassar, as it saw all squads roll past New Hampshire. Epee picked up another clean sweep with Plumer, Alden Pierson Smela (Minneapolis, MN), Nishay Bhatnagar (Livingston, NJ), and Alex Moyse (Montclair, NJ) all going undefeated. Foil went 7-2 behind a 3-0 sweep from Chase Estes (Naples, FL) and a 2-1 mark by Ben Papsun (North Haven, CT). At sabre, Flores and Mills were 3-0.
Vassar now heads to New York City to face Columbia and NYU on Feb. 12. Start time is set for 6 p.m
