Vassar Baseball Game Notes – Skidmore

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 5, 2018) – The Vassar College baseball team will look to get back on the diamond after Wednesday's postponement with City College of New York, taking on Skidmore College for four games this weekend in Liberty League play. Vassar will host Saturday at noon, before heading north to Saratoga Springs, NY for a pair of conference games Sunday.

Last Time Out: The Brewers were on the diamond last Saturday, defeating St. Lawrence University twice with scores of 16-2 and 6-4. Vassar got a great start in game one from Joe Conti, allowing two hits over six innings, while Matt Hernandez was 3-for-5 in game two with an RBI and run scored.
 
A Look At The Brewers (6-6, 3-1 Liberty):
 
  • Junior Bryan Rubin had a strong week for VC last week, chalking up two hits against Old Westbury, and chalked up three hits and three RBI in game one against SLU in game one.
  • Vassar is hitting .417 with the bases loaded so far this year (5-12).
  • With a runner on third base and less than two outs, Vassar has advanced the runner 76.7 percent of the time.
  • Freshman Tanner Blough hit .429 over his first four conference games, adding a team-high five RBI in conference action.
  • Sophomore Narendra Martin doubled in a pair of runs in his first Liberty League at-bat.
  • Daniel Bonfiglio, Bobby Kinne, Evan Trausch and Tanner Blough are the only four players to have played all 12 games this year.  
  • Sophomore Max Spencer has posted a dazzling 0.95 ERA over his 19 innings this season, as batters are hitting just .164.
  • Trausch currently leads the team with a nine-game hitting streak, also having a reached base safely streak of 10 games.
  • The 3-1 conference record through four games is the best in program history.
 
A Look At The Thoroughbreds (9-8, 4-4 Liberty):
 
  • Skidmore comes into the weekend batting .252 as a squad, which is eighth in the Liberty League.
  • The Thoroughbreds are true to their namesake, as Skidmore is second in the conference in stolen bases with 29, being caught only five times this season.
  • Skidmore's pitching has been effective this season, posting the conference's second-best ERA at 4.38.
  • The T-Breds are seventh in the Liberty League in fielding percentage at .943.
  • Matt Chipkin leads the team in hitting with a .343 batting average, also posting two homers and a slugging percentage of .629.
  • Will Potter is batting .340, while Patrick Geiger is batting .321 for Skidmore.
  • Sam Beck, Spencer Anderson, Jay Gamboa and Spencer Meyer have started the conference games for the Thoroughbreds.
  • Andrew Aikins is the top bullpen arm for Skidmore, allowing no earned runs over seven appearances.
 
Against Skidmore All-Time: Vassar is 25-41 against Skidmore since 1992, as VC has played Skidmore more than any other opponent in program history. Last season, Vassar won three of four games against Skidmore.
