Vassar Baseball Game Notes – CMSV, New Paltz

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 23, 2018) – The Vassar College baseball team will look to extend its winning streak this week, hosting a pair of mid-week contests on Prentiss Field. Vassar will entertain the College of Mount St. Vincent on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m., before welcoming in New Paltz Wednesday at 4 p.m. for non-conference play.

Last Time Out: Vassar took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader with Lehman College Sunday, earning victories with scores of 9-4 and 9-1. Junior Jake Doyle was 3-for-4 with two RBI in game one, while fellow junior Matt Schwartz was 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs in game two. Mitchell Mullock got the win in game two after allowing no earned runs over six innings of work.
 
A Look At The Brewers (14-13):
  • Vassar has been impressive at home this year, going 9-4 in games played on Prentiss Field.
  • The Brewers are led offensively by senior Bobby Kinne, who's ninth in the Liberty League in hitting and second in home runs with six.
  • With Elliott Layne's home run in game two of VC's doubleheader on Sunday, the Brewers now have 13 homers for the year, surpassing 2002's total of 12 for the most in a single campaign.
  • Kinne and sophomore Evan Trausch are tied for the team lead in multiple RBI contests with five each.
  • Vassar starting pitching has posted a solid ERA of 4.48 this season, being helped by the second-best fielding percentage in the league at a .965 clip.
  • The Brewers have thrown out nine of 28 potential base-stealers so far this season.
  • Sophomore Mitchell Mullock is having a great season thus far, posting a team-best 1.93 ERA with only six earned runs over 28 innings of work. He's also walked just three all season.
  • VC is second in the Liberty League in long balls this year with 13, behind just the 21 from Union.
  • Junior Jake Doyle has upped his batting average to .345 for the season, and has scored 15 runs, second-most on the team.
  • Sophomore Robert Pinataro is averaging 12.60 strikeouts per nine innings.
A Look At The Dolphins (8-25):
  • The Dolphins come in struggling lately, having dropped their last 14 games, including two to St. Joseph's of Long Island Sunday afternoon.
  • CMSV late picked up a win April 6, splitting a non-conference doubleheader with CCNY.
  • The Dolphins are led offensively by Anthony Nocero, who is hitting .351 with 26 hits in 74 at-bats.
  • Matthew Nesensohn has a team-best two homers this year, and Emanuel Giumarra leads the squad with 28 hits.
  • Matt DiNorcia plays every day for CMSV and has posted 26 hits in 104 at-bats, while making only five errors all season on the infield.
  • CMSV has a team ERA this season of 8.58, though Eric Ricardo has been strong with a 3.45 ERA over 28.2 innings of work.
  • Joshua Pacheco leads the team in relief appearances with 10. 
A Look At The Hawks (14-14):
  • The Hawks lost two of three to No. 6 Cortland this weekend, but did finish on a high note with an 8-6 victory.
  • New Paltz starts a season-ending six-game road trip, finishing their season with trips to Oneonta, Ithaca and Fredonia in addition to Wednesday's contest at VC.
  • The Hawks have hit the ball well this year so far, posting a .292 batting average, as Chris Moran leads the team with a .356 average.
  • Moran also has five homers and 26 runs to lead the squad, while Jake Williams is hitting .343 with team-highs of 35 hits, 12 doubles and 25 RBI.
  • Nick DePietro has stolen 19 bases in 20 attempts for the Hawks, while Dwayne Page is 12 for 14 on the base paths.
  • Michael Delio has thrown 30.2 innings for New Paltz, starting four games, posting a 3.82 ERA while going 2-2.
  • Brian LoRusso also has appeared in a squad-high 11 games, while Luke Christy has a 4.30 ERA over five starts this season.
  • New Paltz is under the direction of second-year head coach Arlan Freeman, who took over for current Vassar head coach Matthew Righter.
  • Vassar is 7-28 against New Paltz all-time, falling to the Hawks 4-3 last season in New Paltz.
Up Next: Vassar jumps back into Liberty League play this weekend, taking on Union College (20-6, 11-4 Liberty) in a home-and-home Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
