POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 24, 2018) – The Vassar College men's tennis team made quick work of visiting Clark University on Saturday afternoon, showing its depth throughout the lineup to dispatch of the visiting Cougars 9-0 in non-conference action from the indoor courts inside Walker Field House.
The victory got the Brewers (5-2) back into the win column after a defeat last weekend to Skidmore College, as VC has now won three of its last four with a big match against No. 27 New York University Sunday down in the Big Apple.
"I am pleased with the result today against Clark," said head coach
Alex Wong. "We were able to win all three doubles matches which gave us good momentum going into singles. The guys didn't let up and showed good intensity throughout the singles so we are glad to have earned the 9-0 win."
Vassar jumped out on top early at the No. 3 position, as
Nicolas Demaria and
Nick Zuczek continued their winning ways together with another victory, topping Jacob Malicky and Andrey Samodaev 8-1 to push their season mark to 4-0. VC doubled its lead at No. 1 doubles, thanks to freshman
Adam Krueger and sophomore
Jeremy Auh, as the duo we victorious 8-4.
The closest doubles match happened at the No. 2 position, but junior
Jamie Anderson and freshman
David Gandham pushed past Lenny Siegel and Jack Han 8-5 to sweep the first three matches. The win for Anderson was his first doubles victory of the year in his first match on the doubles court.
In singles, Krueger made quick work of Chris Ruebens with a 6-0, 6-2 score line to bring the Brewers to within one win of claiming the match. The victory would come minutes later, as Gandham knocked off Jose Dalla-Valle 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to earn the match for the Brewers. Gandham has now won his last four matches and is 4-0 this season at the No. 2 spot.
Junior
Nick Lee claimed his first win of the season at No. 5 singles, knocking off Alex Hattenbach 6-3, 6-2, while Anderson followed with another win at No. 3 thanks to his 6-0, 6-4 finish. Demaria became Vassar's fourth and final double winner of the day as he knocked off Han 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 to make the score 8-0.
Sophomore
Zamir Birnbach finished the proceedings Saturday with a bang, knocking off Malicky 6-2, 6-0. Birnbach posted one of the best points on the match to finish the day, as he clinched his No. 6 singles point with an unbelievable sliding half-volley off of a drop shot from Malicky.
"We obviously have a quick turnaround as we have NYU tomorrow," said Wong. "It was good to get some other people into the lineup and they did a great job. It is a credit to the hard work that each player has put in this semester. We will need a full team effort tomorrow and we are looking forward to the challenge."
