POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 21, 2018) – The Vassar men's lacrosse team begins their 2018 campaign on Saturday, February 24 at 3:30 p.m. against Drew University on Weinberg Field.
The Brewers are looking to continue their success from a season ago in which they posted the most wins in program history (11) while qualifying for the Liberty League Tournament for the first time. In 2017, they graduated a 10-member senior class and will have to replace seven starters from last season's tournament game.
This year's squad will be led by a trio of captains including senior
Alex Georgalas and juniors
Matt Boyd and
James Thomas.
Vassar's three returning starters include
Matthew Lowery,
Michael Mullen, and
Matt Boyd. Lowery started 15 of 16 games at the midfield, taking 261 faceoffs for the Brewers. His 0.617 percentage at the "X" was tops on the team. Mullen is Vassar's top returning scorer as he recorded 39 points while starting all 16 games at attack. Boyd started 14 games between the pipes last season. He posted a 10-3 record with an 8.81 goals against average and 135 saves.
The top three returning scorers for the Brewers are
Michael Mullen,
James Thomas, and
Drew Adams. Mullen had 39 points as a freshman, third on the team. He tallied 24 goals and 15 assists while starting all 16 games at attack. Thomas registered 21 points last season as a sophomore. He played 14 games while earning one start, notching 15 goals and six assists. Adams had seven goals and seven assists in 2017 as a sophomore midfielder. He appeared in 14 games, coming off the bench each time.
Vassar added 10 new players to the roster this season, adding depth at every position on the field. In the net, the Brewers added freshman goalkeeper
David Metzger from Mendham, NJ. At defense,
Stefan Fleps,
Zack Henig, and
Reid Quattlebaum will all fight for playing time. In the midfield,
Colin Croghan,
Joseph Bradley, and
Michael Killion all add depth to one of the most important positions on the field. And in the offensive third,
Tomás Meade,
Ryan Weiss, and
Spencer Duryee bring youth and creativity to the attack position.
This season, the Brewers will match up with four teams ranked in the USILA Preseason Coaches' Poll. Out of conference, Vassar will face preseason No. 2 Wesleyan on March 14. Getting into league play, three Liberty League members were ranked inside the Preseason Top-20. The first of those matchups will be against No. 9 St. Lawrence on March 17, followed by No. 3 RIT on March 24, and No. 17 Ithaca on March 31.
Six teams will qualify for the 2018 Liberty League Tournament which begins on Saturday, April 28 with the First Round of play. The semifinal and final rounds are scheduled for Wednesday, May 2 and Saturday, May 5 with the No. 1 seed hosting the final two rounds.
