MONTCLAIR, NJ (January 31, 2018) -- The Vassar College men's swimming & diving team finished its 2017-18 dual meet schedule on Wednesday evening on the road, falling to hosts Montclair State University 115-79 in action from Panzer Athletic Center.
The Brewers saw strong performances from many different swimmers, including senior
Jonah Strand, sophomore
Jordan Kalina and freshman
Max White. The meet was just a 13-event slate on Wednesday, but Vassar started the night with a near-miss in the 200 medley relay, finishing second by just 0.21 seconds with a 1:41.64.
As the only distance swimmer competing for Vassar Wednesday, Kalina was solid in the 1000 free, posting a second-place finish by nearly beating his season-best time by chalking up a 10:22.28.
White was in the pool for the first time as an individual in the 200 freestyle, earning Vassar's first win of the night with a 1:47.54. Teammate
Harrison Taylor registered a season-best time in the 200 free by swimming a 1:55.41, while
Finn Belanger continued to improve with a personal-best 1:58.66.
In the 50 freestyle, sophomore
Matthew Imiolek was third overall with a time of 22.93, just missing earning the win, while teammate
Parker Bartz established a new personal-best with a 23.91.
Strand returned to the water for the first time since the relay in the 200 IM, and rolled to the victory with a 2:01.07. In diving,
Connor Martin dove in his last dual meet and performed well, taking second place with his third-best score of the season of 167.25.
The Brewers saw Taylor finish third in the 100 butterfly with a 56.35, just missing his season-best, while
Parker Bartz tied his season-best with a 52.83 in the 100 freestyle. White finished third in the 100 backstroke after swimming a 58.62, and Kalina took third place in the 500 freestyle with a 5:11.93.
Strand earned another win in the 100 breaststoke for Vassar with a 1:01.04, and
Danny Dunn swam a 1:14.56 as well for the Brewers. In the 200 medley relay, VC's relay team of White, Taylor, Imiolek and Strand swam a 1:36,17 followed by the 1:41.38 from Bartz, Dunn, Belanger and Kalina.
The Brewers will now focus on Saturday's home Senior Day meet in Kresge Pool, honoring Martin and Strand during the Vassar College Sprint Invitational at 1 p.m. in Poughkeepsie.
