POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 5, 2017) – The Vassar College field hockey team comes into the week off a 2-0 start to the 2017 campaign, defeating Marywood University and SUNY Geneseo this weekend to earn the Betty Richey Tournament title. Vassar knocked off Marywood 1-0, followed by a 3-1 win over the Knights Saturday afternoon. VC's Wednesday evening trip to Union, NJ will be its first road test of the season.

Cristina Lopez was selected as the Betty Richey Tournament MVP. Caveny scored two goals for VC on the weekend, while Lopez was part of three of the four tallies, scoring the game-winner Friday evening against Marywood. She followed that by assisting on both of Caveny's scores on Saturday.
A Look At the Brewer (2-0):
- Vassar's strong defensive unit was on display once again this weekend, as the Brewers outshot their opposition 47-5 over the two games.
- On that same point, Vassar has chalked up 25 penalty corners through two contests, allowing just seven against.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Rotolo has now played in 300 total minutes as a collegiate goalkeeper, and has yet to allow a goal for the Brewers.
- With her two goals on Saturday, Megan Caveny has moved until a tie for seventh all-time in total points with 48. She also is now tied for ninth in all-time goals with 17 career tallies.
- With his two wins this weekend, Michael Warari upped his career record with the Brewer to 50-24. His 50 wins are the second-most in program history behind the 77 from Judy Finerghty.
- The Brewers have now won their first two games in each season that Warari has been the head coach at Vassar, dating back to the 2013 campaign. Previous to him, that feat had happened just twice since 2006.
- Junior Haley Cubell scored her first goal of the season Saturday against Geneseo, as all three of her shots this weekend came on cage.
- A pair of freshmen earned starting nods in both games this weekend, as defender Ally Aquilina-Piscitello and Dara Studnitzer each were tabbed with the assignment both days.
- Wednesday evening's game at Kean is one of just two back-to-back road stretches for VC, as they play at Brockport Saturday. The other road stretch comes September 27 and 30.
- Junior Monica Feeley was the only player this weekend to play all 140 minutes for the Brewers.
A Look At The Cougars (2-0):
- Kean comes into the week undefeated after winning the Susquehanna Tournament this past weekend. KU knocked off Ithaca 3-0 and Susquehanna 5-0.
- Krista LaMaina leads the Cougars with three goals this season, while Kayla Molnar has chalked up two as well.
- Shauna LaMaina and Raykena Brown each have two assists to pace the Cougars.
- KU has outshot its opponents 38-7 this season, while allowing just two shots on goal.
- Bailee Mullen has played all but three minutes in the cage for the Cougars, making two stops while helping the squad to a pair of shutouts.
- Kean has allowed just one first-half penalty corner through two games, and has surrendered only seven total through two games.
- Kean was picked to finish fourth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, also earning one first-place vote.
- Head coach Leslie LaFronz earned her 100th career win at Kean in the Cougars' season-opening win over Ithaca.
Against Kean All-Time: The Brewers are 4-7 all-time against the Cougars, as Kean has picked up wins the last two seasons. Two of the last three games have come down to overtime, but VC is 1-5 in Union, NJ in program history.
Up Next: The Brewers will return to the road on Saturday morning, waking up early to take on The College at Brockport at 10 a.m. in non-conference action in Brockport, NY. The game was moved up to accommodate Brockport's home football contest with Ithaca College.
